Title: Need Karma.*UPDATE* (All Clear)
Post by: stroh on May 14, 2007, 05:53:56 PM
Savannah, Our oldest daughter, left Saturday for Istanbul, Turkey.

She is in her 4th year at UMD, as an art history major.  This is a very short, 6 week internship, she needs (I say, needs.  She says needs.  but don't ask.  I have no idea.  I just pay the bill) to complete her undergraduate degree.  Working in an art gallery.

She left, emailed from a layover in Boston, was flying to Amsterdam, and then on Turkey.

Haven't heard from her yet.  Karen is a nervous wreck.  I'm sure she'll be fine, but I'm starting to get a little edgy.  She's not with any group.  She's basically on her own for  this whole deal.  She has traveled abroad before, but you always get worried.

I know she'll be fine.

Thanks.

Their Beer is pretty ordinary...

Holy crap!  Couldn't she have just gone to work at the Met in NYC for a few weeks to meet this "requirement"?

BTW, I'm actually more shocked that you have a daughter old enough to be in college.

LOL.  I get that a lot.  Savannah is Karen's daughter from her first marriage.  Karen is 7 years older than I am.  Karen and I have been married 11 years this August.

Wondering two things.

Do you know how much restraint it took for me not to throw in the obligatory Billy Hayes reference?

Can Eagle type Bangkok?

It'll all be good, Stroh. She'll wonder why you were worried.  ::)

I have a daughter that is an art history major. Its how they roll.

As long as she doesn't try to smuggle hash or anything I think she'll be fine.

I hope she has a wonderful trip, learns a lot, and comes home all the better for it.

But, worries aside, Turkey was a great choice.  It's shaping up to be quite an influential country in the coming decades, and I'm sure your daughter will be able to put her internship experience to good use later on.

Stroh, I know how you feel. I have a 24 yr old daughter that has had the privilege of going Europe while in hs, Hong Kong and Mainland China in hs and has been living in NYC since 2001.  The responses we have received from her was along the lines of "I had no idea that you were that worried about me.  If I had known, I would have called you right away."  My verbal response has always been along the lines of - "Glad you're having fun."  While my gut was doing knotting up in big and small knots.

She is going to be fine and her phone call or email will provide relief for you.  Then the cycle starts again because she hasn't been in touch with you in at least 24 hours.  Who said parenting was fun?

Relax.

Pick up a 6 pack on the way home from work, and maybe also a nice relaxing DVD movie to pass the time "until she calls".

Can I recommend 'Midnight Express'?

Can I recommend 'Midnight Express'?

Thank you.  I appreciate the advice.

As for the DVD selection, I fear that may exacerbate the situation.

I'm not sure.  You see, being a duly sworn member of the Il(l)iterati, I avoid anything that is considered a cinematic masterpiece.  Especially a film, with any cultural, social, political, or human element significance.

Definitely one that won 2 oscars.

Can I substitue Ishtar?

If my daughter was over in that part of the world and I watched Ishtar, I'd be an emotional trainwreck.  Minimally, I wouldn't take a seat in front of the tv on the barcolounger unless I was double wrapped in Depends.

Midnight Express is a timeless story about unrequited love...sorta like Romeo and Juliet but not exactly.

Ishtar is about camels and the people who ride them....if you know what I mean.

All Clear!

Karen got the email today.  She's fine. (as assured by all of you.) She's in a great spot, was welcomed by good people, and has settled in.  She's having a blast.

Some dude on on here nailed it.  Something about not being able to find a Starbucks, with a decent wi-fi signal.

Sincerest thanks to all of you for your kind words, reassurance, and laughter.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some beer to drink.  I need to change into a more suitable adult undergarment,as I have a date with Dustin Hoffman.

Stroh,

I am real happy for you and glad to hear that your daughter has confirmed all of our sentiments that she is ok.

Forget what I said about starting to worry about her again because really, that won't happen for at least another couple of days.  Your a DAD.  That is part of the process!

Even though you can be relatively sure of something, isn't it nice to be reassured of it - especially when the reassurance comes from the one you are concerned about? :)

Glad to hear that things are going well for Savannah.
