Title: I Got A Bussiness Idea.
Post by: stroh on February 09, 2008, 09:41:58 AM
I was skimming the ol' AM dial on the way home yesterday, I catch this one dude talking about hops.

'Perntly there has been a decent shortage over the last couple of years, and that has driven the price way up.   Micro brewers are still going strong, and there are a lot of serious home brewers.

This *feces* going for upwards of 60 cents an ounce or 8 dollars and higher a pound.

I have no idea what geef is going for, but this seems pretty lucrative, and more legal.

I've been re-surfing all morning, and run across a lot of good info.   Sure as *feces*, on Ebay, some varieties are going for over 20 bones a pound.  [sm_shock]

Minnesota is listed as a suitable climate for growing, and one of the local micro joints has purchased 2.5 acres, and are going to start growing next year.

This may just be the ticket.  [sm_beertoast]

So how many pounds of hops can be grown per acre?

I may have to go ask the Google. It appears with the weather we're having it will be an "inside" day around here anyway.

Not sure.  I will have to El Goog that as well.

Just eyeballing it, not much.  e.g.  The picture of a 1 pound bag of buds on Ebay, over a picture of 1 mature plant looks to be maybe 5 bags per plant.
Starter plants average about 5 bucks.

Got it.  I was off a bit.  Average is a little over 2 pounds per plant.

If the microbrewers don't want to buy your *feces*, can you at least smoke it?

Hops are related to cannabis.

It would take a couple of years for the plants to mature enough to give you a crop.  Due the high prices, more acreage probably will be planted this year, so by the time you're ready to sell, the price will have dropped.
