Title: Sawgrass #17
Post by: Uisce Beatha on May 10, 2007, 10:09:44 AM
Tiger called it gimicky yesterday according to TGC.  The comments were tame enough but, as with everything he says, they ran with it.

So what do you think?  I'm solidly in the "Strongly Agree" camp.  I have no use for a hole where a perfect stroke combined with the slightest gust of wind can cost you two shots.

Just say no to island/peninsula greens.

Having said all that, it makes for great TV.   [sm_devil]

Strongly agree, however, I agree with him, that it should be #8, not 17.

#12 at you know where is no different.

the best in the world cant stick an wedge/ short iron in a 15x50 yard box  from 135 yards?   please.

What does a golf hole have to do with the best players in the world?

That hole is just the same the other 361 days of the year.  Whether it is gimicky or not has little to do with who's playing it.

did i hear it wrong?  i thought his comment was that it was gimmicky to have the hole as* #17 (hence, also #71).  If so,  I disagree- there's nothing hard about the hole for a pro golfer.  To me, a gimmick hole would punish good shots and reward bad shots...  or otherwise require an absolute 1/100000000  type shot.  Not the case at TPC 17.   So what is left ? Too tired after 16 holes to hit a wedge accurately? I doubt it (and if so, get a new job! :D)  The only remaining obstacle could then be the mental/stress aspect.   If they really let the hole get that much in their heads, then it's certainly not a gimmick- it's them.  They can hit that shot 1000 times in a row on the range.    Augusta #12  is practically the same thing.

I used Tiger's comments to introduce the thread/question but I'm really just asking if the hole is gimicky on its own merits.  Not necessarily as hole #17 or #71 of a tour event.  Is it gimicky to YOU?

I think it's gimicky because you HAVE to hit the green.  It takes everything other than tee shot and putts out of the game.  Throw in the gusting wind and now even a perfect shot can get wet and conversely a poor shot can stay dry.  That's part of your criteria even though we may see the truth of my statement differently.   8)

It is gimmicky, so I voted "agree".  But hey - whats wrong with having a hole like that every once in a while?  8)

fair enough, I didn't read carefully enough at first that you meant ... to ME... :D .  I guess in that context, i would say perhaps.  it seems more like target golf at its strictest....  I never really thought of target golf as gimmicky,  but I can see how others may.

ps,  can't you put it up the cart path all the way to the green?  ;)

Or, play it off the seagull's head, ricochet off the rake, and dribble it into the clowns ass.

I don't think so.  Granted I wouldn't want to play it when it counts and the wind is blowing.  But I'd love to give it a shot.  Besides if you hit it in the water you can still make par just like Couples.

now, if it were set on more of a diagonal line to the tee (say 45* or so...)... or if that tree were in the way...

Oh, and I guess I agree.  But I think that would make it all the more fun to play.

However, anything I could do there could never compare to how bad you golf when houses are present. :P :D

Year in and year out I don't know of too many more par 3 golf holes that are discussed as much. The 12th at Augusta, the 7th at Pebble, the 17th at Sawgrass.

I think it's a great golf hole, scary, challenging, diabolical in it's simplicity, these guys are the best in the world and this shot scares them to the point of cotton mouth and loss of sphincter control, and that's when there is no wind.

Ps. come over to my neck of the woods and I'll show you a real island green.

How is it 'Gimmicky'?

It's a fairly large green, although getting it on the correct level AND side makes it smaller.

Just more tour players whining when they  run into a situation where a makeable birdie putt isn't an automatic.

Tough *feces*, says I, and who really gives a crap what hole it is.

As far as it being gimicky, I have no opinion.

But it is a challenging hole.  These guys are the best in the world, and if they played for the middle of the green, they'd probably have no problem.  However, in any given situation, ie. needing a birdie, these guys go flag-hunting and that's when they get into problems.

At one of the courses here, we've got an island green and it's fun to play.  It certainly adds an element of collar-tightening not found on the 17 other holes.
