what's the steepest price you'll pay as a fraction of your monthly paycheck  for a bottle ?

example:  you make 1000 a month,  and wont pay more than 20$
2%

After doing the math, it appears that I'm a bit of a cheap *fudge*.

1%

Depends on what. I guess about 3%, though I'm not above spending 1%, or less, for some.
I think Columbia Grand Estates Merlot, Cabernet, and Chardonnay are more than acceptable without breaking you wallet, especially if you let it sit on the cork for a bit.
Lindemans, from Australia has some nice choices, also. For everyday wines these are good choices.
Of course, YMMV.

I'd guess my marriage would have some problems, but just in case I'd better not do the math.  [sm_drinking]

$.02 in place of linedemans  check   rosemount estates for EXCEPTIONAL   aussie reds in the $10-$20 range (2005 to 2002)

I like Rosemont Estates, also. Their Shiraz and their shiraz-cab are great. I'm not too fond of their Chard, but I'm coming around to it. For an inexpensive Aussie Chard, I like Banrock Station. Little to no oak. The Lindemans Pinot is surprisingly good for the price. 1999 to 2002 vintage is really nice.

I agree with you on the aussie reds. I have a friend in Portland that turned me on to them about 4 years ago.

No, I don't drink wine.  I just wanted  to chime in.  6-7 total monthly spent on being able to cope with life. ;)

I'll say that it would have to be a Big Deal before I'd spend more than $20 on a bottle of wine.  My absolute max would be something like $50 for wine, and it better be (a) an occasion and (b) damn good wine.

I don't like spending big bucks on consumables or transient gifts, unless there's some memory or shared experience to be had.  I.e., we just wouldn't find it memorable drinking an $80 bottle of wine.

random, rude, offtopic question,   do attorneys in your field work in 'billable' hours,  and if so, how many do you do?
 :)

Yes, they do ... at law firms.  The quotas range from 1600 to 1950 at the firms I'm familiar with.  And some of them are happy to see numbers ABOVE 1950.  Most I've ever heard of for IP attorneys is about 1900.  That's still working A LOT.

I guess I once paid a shade over 3% for one bottle of wine. Put in those terms it seems totally obscene. (It was really good though).

A store up the street has a wall where they show 'special selections' from their sommelier, who's taste I'm learning to trust.  Stuff near the floor on this wall is sold ~$20, whereas stuff on the upper shelves is in the $100+ range.

I've been working myself up from the floor, and beginning to resonate with a bunch of stuff they are offering at about waste high, in the $30-$50 range.

ahhh... let me check my wine guide.... ;)

There is a label called "Ravenswood".. made by Hollick Wines from the Coonawarra region in South Australia.

This might be the one you're thinking of.

Whoa, that's cool, I didn't know about Ravenswood in Australia.  Looks like it's related to the Ravenswood in Sonoma from the logos.  I've been to their Sonoma winery several times, I really like their zin.

..on topic,...

The most i've spent on a bottle of wine is $750....

A mate and I spent this on a bottle of 1971 Grange for our 30th Birthdays...

it was "choice bro"

 ;D
