Title: What Did You Make In Shop Class?
Post by: stroh on April 10, 2008, 08:06:53 PM
I was in shop class every year.  Industrial Arts, some say.  In fact, my senior year, I had 4 hours of shop.  May explain some things.

I made all kinds of *feces*.  But one thing that stands out: I did make a lamp. :D  Kinda funny.  It's become cliche.

I did though.  Glued up a bunch of walnut, turned it on the lathe, drilled the hole......the whole nine yards.

My step mom still has it.   ;D

I made a Def Leppard mirror. I took a wood board, cut the logo out with a jigsaw, lacquered it, and mounted a mirror on the back.

I helped design a house, I was always in drafting, not shop.

We didn't have 'shop' classes at my high school, I guess the next nearest thing we had was art class where I once made an ash tray out of clay...

Right at the end of my senior year, we  got a brand new  [sm_scratch] I don't know what you call it....vertical metal mill?
One of those deals that you put a block of aluminum on, and shape things with the bit by cranking the table back and forth.

The first thing I made was a block with my name in it.  Then I tried to get fancy and make an ash tray.  Looked like *feces*.  LOL

I should have stuck with it.  I could have made putters. ;D

I have a putter with my name on it.  I use it as an ashtray.

I didn't take shop. They said it was for my own safety.

I took metal shop, wood shop, and drafting.  I liked drafting the best.
Metal shop we made book holders.
Wood shop,,,some little hand tool that you use to pull out the oven rack when it's hot.

In 8th grade, I made a cabinet to place my TV on.  Never did get the doors made for it.  Freshman year in HS I worked on a shelf with a drawer in it and a rail along the top that needed a bunch of turnings supporting it.  I spent my whole semester at the lathe.  Never did finish that either.

After that, I had three years of drafting.  I was planning on being an architect.  I should have followed that path.  It would have been more interesting than accounting.

Metal and wood shop here as well. And drafting. Lot's of drafting for engineering. I remember when AutoCAD made it's debut in college. It was all that and more.  8)

Susan was in 4-H. Made clothes and showed stuff at the State Fair. Her neighbor raised sheep.  :tape: :holysheep:

Never took shop class.  I probably would have cut off my hand or something.  I always took art instead.  I made a pretty sweet ceramic ashtray too.

Ummmm....  :raisehand:

Three years in high school and a year of college before I realized sitting at a drafting table all day long totally blew.

Short - yes.  Stocky - yes.  Funny (looking) - yes.  Blading - no, 550Cs.

Girls were not allowed to take shop class at my school  >:(- it was Home Ec all the way.  Learned important girl skills:  Correct shampooing techniques, performing guest introductions and making white sauce and baking powder biscuits. [sm_puke]

Didn't get to make cool stuff with a Bridgeport until my college years doing research.

Did 4H as Fuzzy said earlier - one year my sheep raising neighbor and I traded county fair duties:  I sewed him a pinstripe suit which he HAD to model in the runway show and I got to SHOW a sheep in the livestock arena.

 [sm_laughing]

When I saw that I called her immediately for two reasons: to congratulate her on joining in the the fun and using smileys to enhance her post and to tell her that the "humping" smiley in a post that references sheep may not be what she wanted with this crowd. She thought it was something completely different.  :)

As always I am excited and proud to bring this aspect to any GolfHos discussion.

I made a 2 foot bong. Drilling it out was not easy but I finally finished it. I (remember now this is 1979) convinced the shop teacher that it was a small Australian aboriginal didgeridoo and I showed him a picture of said instrument.

Note: Not the actual picture Seamus showed Mr. Wackamole in 1979 but a fair rendition there of.

Coincidently I also took home ec, after "playing" the didgeridoo at the "smoking stump" I got to go bake cupcakes, besides home ec was the best class, I think my senior year it was me, one other dude and 29 chicks.

To this day I can't see a didgeridoo without getting cotton mouth and the munchies.

I made fun of the shop teacher with the hare-lip.  He kicked my ass, literally. :boxing:

Amazing what teachers were able to do to students in those days here in flyover 'Merka'.
