Next on the docket: Legislation stating that the Constitution is just a effin' piece of paper. They'd better hurry though, midterm elections are coming up. I hope Republicans have stored some boxes from '94 when they moved in.

I was listening to an analyst from the Brookings Institute this morning (not that I put a ton of stock in "think tank" analysis) speculate that a gain of 30 seats in the House and 6-7 seats in the Senate wasn't totally out of the realm of possibility. I don't know that the Foley fall out will have that huge of an impact, but you can probably go ahead and stick a fork in Hastert, though I don't believe he'll resign until after November.

Maybe it's just because it's a slam dunk for Orrin Hatch, but this election season has been unusually quiet in these parts.

The compromise legislation, which is racing toward the White House, authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States. And once thrown into military prison, they cannot expect a trial by their peers or any other of the normal protections of the Bill of Rights.
