when you have an industry with a license to steal it's not only possible it's probable. the oil industry is killing the auto industry by virtue of nobody being able to afford a new car while paying for everything else in their life being inflated by the oil industry.

why are honda and toyota still profitable in domestic sales then?  ;)
yes, we've beaten this horse into oblivion already

have you looked at toyotas sales #'s? apparently not.

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/toyota-reports-july-sales/story.aspx?guid={9F135EB7-EF0C-4CE3-80CE-5A273921F5DB}&dist=hppr

they are selling cars at almost identical rate to last year  ???

you'd think a phd would be able to read.  ::)
from your link,
Quote
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported July sales of 197,424 vehicles, a decrease of 18.7 percent from last July, on a daily selling rate basis.
The Toyota Division posted July sales of 175,242 units, a decrease of 17.9 percent from last July. The Lexus Division reported July sales of 22,182 units, a decrease of 24.6 percent from the year-ago month.

you'd think 1 month does not make a conclusive year make. and as for reading, please read the data sheet at the bottom regarding cars which was the word YOU used to begin with  [sm_devil]
Quote
CURRENT MONTH-----    --CALENDAR YEAR TO DATE--
                                            DSR %                        DSR %
                            2008     2007     CHG       2008       2007    CHG

TOTAL TOYOTA DIV.
     PASS. CAR           114,880  112,153    -5.4    795,682    794,459   -0.4

TOTAL LEXUS
     PASS. CAR            13,219   16,755   -27.2     94,478    115,665  -18.8

TOTAL TOYOTA
     PASS. CAR           128,099  128,908    -8.3    890,160    910,124   -2.7

[/qoute]

so lexus is hurting them a bit, as are trucks/etc. however, toyota's new car sales are doing just as well as last year (-.4% is negligible i would say)
never enter a semantics game with me  ;D

Yikes.

I'm quite comfortable with aske's biases - but it does crack me up to no end when he claims he doesn't have them  ;)

For the record, it's always sort of puzzled me why a guy whose livelihood pretty much hinges on a strong economy derives such pleasure out of the fact that it's tanking, perhaps it's sort of bizarre reverse-schadenfreude. But I've never quite understood Norwegian black metal and corpse paint either. I always figured aske just marches to the beat of a different double bass drum.

............... derives such pleasure out of the fact that it's tanking,

Hmmmm.  I guess I'm in left field again.

I always thought he was reveling in the fact that he was right, in predicting it.

I took it as a more general statement that he only gets excited by bad news, or someone to blame it on.  An evaluation of his collective works methinks.

We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is,
I promise you Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things, and two things only:
making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it.

Birdy, laughing at GM's ineptitude is a sport that goes all the way back to the 80's when it started to become quite, quite clear that they were living on their reputation and weren't really interested in The Car Bidness anymore, deciding instead to keep foisting cheaply built and poorly designed crap off on the American Motoring Public while driving profit through the financing end.

Bad things happen to stupid people, and upper management at GM has been stupid for decades...

I could go on, but it's not really necessary.

Even when they farmed the design and manufacturing out to industry leader Toyota, they couldn't figure out how to sell the damn things.

We're talking about a company whose CEO recently announced that they would produce the electric Volt in 2010, and hope the battery technology would catch up by then so that the car would no longer suffer the occasional "Catastrophic Thermodynamic Event", ie the *fudge*er has a tendency to burst into flames unannounced.

The fact that he said with a straight face is amazing, but not really surprising.

What they did to the once venerable LeMans is reason enough to hate GM. And don't get me started on what they're passing off as a GTO these days. Hatex9!

That's actually a pretty nice car, and I thought it reflected nicely on what the original GTO actually was, which was a low end compact with a big honkin' motor in it.

I don't disagree that the styling is less than stellar, and it looks like pretty much every other mid-size sedan out there, however.
