Title: Interesting lineage?
Post by: spacey on December 11, 2007, 02:59:36 PM
The Daniel Boone thread got me thinking. Does anyone here have any interesting or cool ancestry?

Genealogy being big in these parts, my grandmother claims to have traced our lineage back to Noah, or Adam, or Alexander the Great or something. The first two being dubious at best, and the second being no real claim to fame (a lot of people, I suspect, can claim ancestry of some conqueror or other, as that's kind of what conquerors did is spread their lineage, so to speak), the best I can do is claim that my great, great (maybe another great?) grandfather was Edward Partridge. But that name won't mean anything unless you've spent a fair chunk of time reading Mormon scriptures. The mother in law was impressed by it.

The wife just found out a year or two ago that apparently she's a direct descendant of Cheng or Eng (don't know 100% which) Bunker. Kind of creepy/cool.

You?

We have traced my Dad's Mom back through the revolutionary war and into Scotland - Rose Clan.

Nothing really famous/infamous though.

I would love to have the time to devote more research into all of my grandparents ancestry.

Arthur Middleton - signer of the Declaration of Independence.  Thats as famous as it got when my grandfather did his investigation.  Pretty cool though.

The lady that sits across from me is a descendent of the James family (Frank or Jesse, I'm not sure which).  I'm nice to her just in case.

What's creepy is that they were both married to seperate wives and each fathered his own set of children while still attached to each other.

You?
Nobody of significance.

[sm_shock]  funky.  I don't have anyone interesting in my ancestry, but my knowledge doesn't go back very far.

I've been reading a lot about 23 and me (https://www.23andme.com/) recently.  When the price comes down, I'll be tempted to send some saliva in.  The next decade should be really interesting in mapping out everyone's genealogy.

Apparently, Chang and Eng were quite :airquotes: prolific (http://engandchang.twinstuff.com/tree.htm) :airquotes:.

Nobody.  Descendant of orphans, convicts, farmers, factory workers, fisherman, drunkards, rapers, pillagers and other assorted Irishmen.  Probably an Englishman/Norman or two in there somewhere.   [sm_disgust]

Ah well, you can't pick your family.

I have no idea.  My best guess goes back only a generation or two, to some drunk Scot who landed here in South Carolina.  That and some Cherokee, but not the cool feather, horseback kind.  Probably the more suburban hair brush salesman "domesticated" type.

Who knows?

[Edit]  Preemptive:  Save the YouTube for the Friday Night Drink Fest.   ;)

The correct term is "sivilized".

Commodore John Barry on my side.
http://www.ushistory.org/people/commodorebarry.htm

Teddy Roosevelt on my wife's side.

I can't say these distant connections have had any impact in our lives, other than occasionally making for interesting conversation. However, I did chuckle recently when my daughter had an assignment for Veteren's Day where she had to write of ancestors from her maternal or paternal side who had served in combat.

Seeing it in print was kind of funny:

Commodore John Barry, Father of the American Navy, Revolutionary War
Theodore Roosevelt, Colonel First Cavalry Regiment, Spanish American War

JD, there's a statue of John Barry in Wexford town that being his birthplace.  I've looked at it sober and bumped into it otherwise.

My family is right up the road.  Who knows, maybe we're distantly related.  As I mentioned, there are bound to be a few Normans in my line.   ;)

Oh yeah, that one famous guy's family ::) is from the area too.

Wow, that picture gives me goosebumps. Thanks for posting it. Barry has a statue outside of Independence Hall in Philadelphia as well. I took my oldest daughter there last summer and she was blown away.

As far as being related, who knows? I'll drink to that, anyway! I don't know much of the Barry's in County Wexford though. I actually have many more ancestors (that I know of) from County Cork (Hannigan, Murphy, and Scully, if that helps).

Oh no, Americans love their Irish ancestry and the Irish love their American offspring.  Pissing on that statue might get you killed.

Threadjack story re: Wexford and pissing.  Last time I was down there was after my grandmother's funeral.  My cousin and I had made it there somehow and watched a match in a pub.  We decided it was lager day and proceeded to try all the guy had on draught.  He was kinda bent with us after a bit as he thought we were saying his pints were bad - people don't switch mid-session there.  Anyway, we had to ride the slow bus back up the coast road to get to Gorey.  About halfway I was set to burst.  The bus stopped at a wide spot in the road to pick up a woman and I told the bus driver I was getting off to visit a hedge.  If he wanted to wait for me I'd appreciate it but if he felt he had to leave that'd be fine too.  And when is the next bus due please?  He waited but must have been on a tear about useless Yanks as when I got back on the bus I caught it from pretty much every old one on board.  Didn't matter.  That was the greatest piss of my life.  I still remember it fondly.

No Cork.  Wexford and Carlow.

Me: No one famous but I had a great great grandfather that held by Blackfoot when pappy was a baby. On my mom's side someone working in the kitchen of Queen Victoria. Otherwise a lot like UB, mostly hooligans and heathens.

Wife: 7 Great Uncle was Ben Franklin. Her 6 Great grandfather was his brother. (or something like that)

Pfft, whatever. My great great great great great great great great grand Uncle was arrested for public intoxication in London then pissed on a bobby. Ben Franklin my ass.

My mom has gone way back on both sides of my family, nothing really interesting.  My fathers side of the family are irish, my great grandfather immigrated to Boston from Belgium where he worked as a fisherman and cigar roller.  Somewhere between Ireland and Belgium, a surname change from Chambers to Campers took place and no one way is really sure why.

On my moms side, her mother was a Sicilian immigrant, so little is known.  Her fathers family goes way to England, with a long history in the states.  There was a time when it was believed we were also related to Jesse James, but it turns out this Jesse was a female, and died a few years before the other more famous Jesse died.

Well now, nobody what's truly famous.  Several Generals and Admirals, but them are as what's from the 'literate' side of the family.

My maternal great, great grandmother was a tavern wench somewhere in Virginia.

On my fathers side there are assorted felons.  You know, one brother killing two other brothers in a gunfight circa 1890 or so.

Civil war era, 'Union' cousins hanging 'sesech' cousins.  That sort of thing.

We tended to breed alot too.  My grandfather had 11 brothers and sisters.  My father had 16 brothers and sisters what lived.

Holy crap, I've got over 75 first cousins on the paternal side of the family.

I might be a redneck if....................................................

Oh yeah, We (the family)go way back to Ireland circa 1705, and Scotland before that.

IOW, we like to drink, but we're too damn cheap to pay for it.

Imagine that, we are probably related, afterall.

Perhaps my most well-known ancestor is Augustus Blader IV, who almost saved the passenger pigeon from extinction and at one time had the largest collection of mammalian baculum in the western hemisphere.

Him and some King in England from way back.

It's referred to as "horizontal integration".

If I was younger, single, and looked a lot more like Tom Brady, I would totally use that line at the bar.

"Hey, baby!  You interested in some horizontal integration?"   [sm_hump]

Alan Greenspan never got any tail with his "Wanna stimulate some growth in my private sector?" line, either.

EDIT: And that, my friends, is Post #2000.

LMAO @ this thread.  nobody really of note, then again i barely know even much about 2-3 generations back- too big, varied, and spread out of an extended family.

one great-grandparent was apparently quite a well-off businessman who back in his time had some major major cash for the day ($2-3M). he was even written about in time magazine or something.   from what i have understood most of that went into the medical / care  of my grandparents in their elder age.
