In my business there is a real quality difference between "American made" and overseas. It has to do with culture and not the quality of the worker. The Asian culture has much more pride in the job then in the US. Over there it's more about the product or the company, or both. Over here it is more about "me and what do I get out of it". US workers in general complain more and just want to get paid, to them it's just a job. In Asia it's their life, they take great pride in what they do, and accept the compensation they get. Does this mean it is the same for all businesses? Not necessarily, but I wouldn't doubt it. I don't hate 'merca but Asian companies don't make good products without a reason for it. Somehow I don't think "Our trucks are pretty good but have some potential engine problems we're still trying to work out" would make for very good commercials. Very tough to write a jingle, and I don't think Bob Seger recorded any songs to that effect either. Just for the record, I don't own any "American Made" cars and doubt I will in the foreseeable future (unless it's my classic muscle car). If I were in the market for a heavy duty truck I'd probably buy a Ford, and some of the newer "muscle cars" are kind of cool as Sunday drivers but Detroit has yet to produce a single commuter car or light truck/SUV at which I would look twice. I don't think it's unrealistic to assume that Toyota's rushing a flawed product to market probably isn't the first time an auto manufacturer has done so, Big 3 included. I also seriously doubt this single incident will be enough to completely besmirch Toyota's reputation. (My boss drives a Tundra that he beats the hell out of and it's rock solid. He was formerly an "American made only" guy, but now claims to be a Toyota driver for life.) |
