This is the new BIG release, not just an update.  8)

They're taking quite a hit as they are going for the Guinness Book Of World Records for most downloads of one program in one day (updating *through* Firefox doesn't count) but should be back up shortly. 8)

Updated news. (http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2008/06/17/firefox-3-coming-soon/)

Except for extensions it deems incompatible like:
-Google photo saver
-Google settings
-AVG safe search
-AVG security toolbar

Wrong. :P Although that's what you derserve for using AVG. [sm_disgust] 8)

They'll be updated soon enough, but if you absolutely can't wait, (like me ;D I have 85+ that I am used to using all the time...) there is this extension (http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/firefox/nightly) that can force enable them to be compatible.

Some when forced to be compatible can mess things up though, (most notably themes and toolbars) so if that happens you can just disable them one by one until you find out which one is causing the problems and then just keep that one disabled until a compatible version is released. 8)

Installed yesterday. Other than some additional eye-candy, I remain unconvinced it's much better than its predecessor. It also doesn't seem to play as well with work's firewall and despite my setting it to clear my private data when I close, it doesn't, nor does it appear to clear my private data when I manually command it to. Perhaps after a couple of days I'll be really wowed, but I currently remain tepid.

I really haven't noticed a difference either. Don't get me wrong, I like Firefox but put me in the "meh" camp.

I actually have noticed it much faster.

Quirky on some of the stuff I do, but over all the same, except for the speed loading pages.

Post by: spacey on June 20, 2008, 12:55:34 PM
Okay, I figured out the problem with clearing personal data, but it's still not entirely cooperating with the firewall at work. My tepidness has been upgraded to room temperature.

Try using Firefox in it's Safe Mode for a while and see if the problems still happen. If they go away then the problems is something in your extensions/settings.

Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Firefox (Safe Mode).

Oddly enough, I was coming here to post that I had done precisely that. Figured out I had an incompatible add-on. All is running smoothly now. I still remain unconvinced that it's miles ahead of the previous version, but at least I'm no longer mad for upgrading.

What's with it deleting my download list right after I download?

I have to go searching for the file instead of it being right there in the download window.

Have you restarted Firefox since changing it? Try it in safe mode ( Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Firefox (Safe Mode) ) and see if it does it still.

I can't live without that plug-in.  For real.  I'm uninstalling before I go back to work on Thursday (business trip Mon-Wed.)

More then once. Never started in safe mode but was doing this with the beta version as well as the rc version.

Not exactly sure, I've used Firefox 3 in Beta and RC form for several months though.

Coding is fun.  I enjoy it.  But 8-12 hours per day is enough.  I have no interest in spending 1000+ hours on a Firefox plug-in which would certainly not be anywhere near as good as theirs.

You said "code a better one yourself then".  That's different than a monster open source project.  YMMV.   ;)

Would it be a great gig if one had the means to support himself independently?  Sure.  Unfortunately, my coding really needs to have a direct correlation to a paycheck.  I've done the entrepreneur thing and it's highly overrated.   [sm_shock]

Some day, in retirement, perhaps I'll originate a killer app and be an icon of the open source movement.  Nah, I'll be golfing.

Yeah, the versions on Mozilla's ad-ons page are never up to date really, as the new versions have to be cleared first before they allow them on there, and they can take some time, sometimes.

Torp, I didn't mean to rile your feathers but it seems you have some sort of jovial disrespect for how it is in "the real world."  Most of the members of this board are the wage-earning member of their family.  We have kids to clothe, feed, shelter and educate.  A bit of fun thrown in is always a bonus.  Most/all of us have earned the right to shake our heads a bit at a youngster with all the answers.

We don't have the luxury of being an open-source developer or a full-time inventor or a care provider of an elderly relative.  Those are all worthy pursuits but they simply don't put enough $$$ in the bank account.  We have bills to pay which simply must be paid.  You won't completely understand this;  you simply can't completely understand this.  But please give us our due.  I will respect your choices until you start mocking my lack thereof.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Back on topic:

I have noticed only moderate improvements in memory usage.  Now instead of being worse than IE, its on par with IE.

I have not really noticed much speed improvements - minimal it seems.

Bookmark and address bar search improvements are nice - but not really worthy of .0 status.

So, I'm happy I upgraded, it is better.  But I'm not overwhelmed with joy.

Torp, I didn't mean to rile your feathers but it seems you have some sort of jovial disrespect for how it is in "the real world."

Your "real world", my "real world" is just as real for me as yours is for you.

Most/all of us have earned the right to shake our heads a bit at a youngster with all the answers.

If that's how you've always read into me as coming across, then you've misread me, I don't try to have all the answers, I try to help with any info I know. I don't post much in equipment discussions because I'm a bogey golfer, and don't know much about equipment. If there's a PC thread, and I think I have relevant info to add, I will.

I will respect your choices until you start mocking my lack thereof.

Never knew I did. I was having some fun.

Quite frankly, many of you guys think my Viking posts are annoying/stupid, and you have every right to, I'm a die hard fan, and *always* half cup full type of person, that likes to have some fun with the posts, and to you they are annoying/stupid, or even the definition of annoying/stupid, but for me, that's what I think of the "regularly scheduled programming" comments like the ones below, and I have just as much right to think that as you do with your opinion. :)

stroh's a ****.

Stroh is not a *****, his grotto is humid, but he's no *****.

It's amazing what people forget over time. It's also amazing that people forget there's another side to the coin.

Anyhoo I still want to know why my delete list keeps clearing. Fix it young Padawan.

You could try backing up your Firefox data and doing a clean install. Good to do that every once in a while if you haven't done it for a few versions, it has fixed problems like that in the past.

I'm not at all angry.  No anger in that post. Just floating a few realities from my perspective.  When I'm angry laser beams fire from my eyeballs and I turn the color of mashed turnip.

Publicizing my private messages, interestingly one you didn't deign to answer, might bug me a little though.  As a PC guy I should think your awareness of proper netiquette dictates you don't do that.  However, what I wrote way back then is still my opinion today.

I didn't mention your Vikings posts.  I don't care what you write about football teams.  I'm pretty sure I've taken a friendly dig at your uber-homerism from time to time but that's to be expected, right?  You have to admit you have it coming and I'm sure you expect it.

It's interesting you posted a couple of sarcastic paragraphs implying that the rest of us don't love our parents as much as you do yet my response to that is deemed full of anger.

Anyway, you're a good kid but it's my honestly considered opinion that you lack experience in things such as providing for a family, working towards a productive career, etc.  I was, I thought mildly, calling you out for posting an opinion I believe was quite naive.

No worries.

Fixed.

I wasn't saying you were angry, I was just saying it still applies today.

When it comes to the Queens, I think you're more of a "cup runneth over"-type person.  ;D

Wow, I completely missed some of the middle pages of this thread.  Interesting turn.

I don't know about you guys, but I actually happen to love my parents, and spending time with my family [sm_shock] ( I know, the absolute horror these days, say it aint so  ::) ) and would gladly spend my entire life living with them if I want to. I know, I'll be scarred for life. :lolspit: Oh no! Someone dares to be different. Hang him! :glasses: You there? Or did you faint? ;)

 [sm_shock] *faints* [sm_dramaqueen]
