Title: Aske....
Post by: stroh on November 22, 2006, 06:27:58 PM
Your appreciation for music is well documented.

I was just thinking, I have never heard, or asked; do you play?

Want to? Plan to?  (not like you don't have enough irons in the fire, and need to get caught up after I dunno, finishing a doctorate  LOL ;D)

You know so much about music, esp. [shudder] yours[/sudder]  I figure, you must have been on the "backside" of a guitar sometime. ;)

Also, anybody else?

spacemeister?  Someone as classicaly educated, and well rounded as yourself must have some do re mi in him.

I have a drum set, and can keep time.  I can play a few songs, and fake a lot more.  I wouldn't call my self a "drummer" yet, but I plan to get into it pretty seriously this winter.  What else you gonna do with snow on the ground? chiffonade?

Karen bought me a guitar last Christmas.  I have always wanted to play, but alas, I think I will always be a better golfer than guitarist. :sad3:  I just can't do it.

I played alto saxophone from 4th grade through my 2nd year of college. I spent about 4 years of that time playing both alto and tenor sax in a jazz improv quintet with a stand-up bass, piano, trumpet, and a five piece drum kit. It was very cool and we played a lot of live gigs at a bar in SLC called DB Coopers (and later the Bull and Bear). I think I mentioned in a recent thread on FGI the severe depression I went through entering my senior year. I lost my passion and haven't played since. I keep wanting to pick it up again, but the thought of rebuilding my embouchure brings tears to my eyes.

I messed around with the electric bass and played with a hardcore group for a couple of years in the early nineties. My skill and technique were sub par, but our guitarist and drummer were brilliant, so all I had to do was keep a beat and be able to play in D. When our singer got married, the group stopped playing and I never continued with the bass.

I've also tried on several occasions to play guitar but every time I try it seems I'd prefer to play guitar than learn guitar.

And that is the extent of my illustrious musical history.

Cool!

 [sm_anon]  I threw away my "word a day", after meeting ya'll.  Now I just leave a Dictionary.com window open when I read ya'lls posts.  ;) embouchure........who knew??

DBCoopers!  LOL sweet.  I would say your music career, is illustrious. :)

DarkMaster, do you just "play around", or do anything serious?

Your post must have gotten truncated, or I should have posed the question more in the fashion of:  You don't know *feces* about about hydrogen conversion for power, and Global warming is for sissies! [sm_devil]

lol. Anyone who's ever had to build an embouchure likely has the word tattooed on his brain. Unpleasant business.  ;)

i've been playing the piano since 1979 (earned my diploma in 2000). Also play recorders, guitar, a tiny bit of lute and hand drums and dumbeks, and I sing in an a capella choir. My biggest desire is to purchase a cornamuse (medieval bagpipes) and a hurdy gurdy (lute shaped instrument, played with keys and a crank).

Oh, I almost forgot, that I was involved with rock and metal bands from basically 1990 till 2004 when I left Greece. I loved (and still love) being on stage! :)

Nice.  I ask, 'cause I'm always envious.  I have zero music.(in me, history, family etc.) I enjoy music, and to see someone make the sounds I hear on the radio(or whatever), infront of me, is really cool.

The rig.

Sold my bass rig years ago (Ernie Ball StingRay, Mesa Boogie amp, Marshal Cabinet, Rat Pedal), the tenor sax is also gone. The alto is in the basement in its case which hasn't been opened in the better part of a decade. I'm almost afraid to open it, but I'm guessing it's about $600 worth of restoration before it's ready to play again.

Hey, Cap'n.  I can host them on golfhos, but I can't think of an easy way for you to put them on this site.

Maybe you can upload them at the site below, and I can then copy them to golfhos.com?

Looking into it.

Okay, I uploaded 4 songs. If they manage to find their way onto golfhos, I have to give a couple of warnings to anyone who downloads them:

1) These were taken from an incomplete studio session (we ran out of money, lol) so they were never mastered and there's a lot of mic hiss, chattering, etc. Particularly a lot of Jake (the singer) screwing around between takes, during tracks etc. The sound quality isn't great.

2) Jake (again, the singer) was heavily hip-hop influenced, so a large portion of the music borders on the whole "rapcore" genre (if you're familiar with Orange 9mm, which most of you probably aren't, the influence is undeniable). Trust me a lot of the "yeah, yeah, yeah" and "yo bring the beat back in" garbage that he did bothered us as much as it will bother you. But keep in mind that a lot of the vocals were freestyle. He was making this up as he went, and you can't deny that he was damn good at it.

3) The track "Under Mentor's Eyes" wasn't included for any reason except it features my big "moment" on the bass (lol) and if you listen closely you can year yours truly on back up vocals, particularly noticeable on the "I know; we say; we know; it's the right thing" in the chorus.

Please be kind, it was the early '90s and we were young.

Weird, I logged into the briefcase acct and only see two files under the Stainless folder.  Maybe the other two are still uploading?

Here are links to the two I found:

(I need to track down my headphones, the speakers on my laptop are unlistenable >:()

Hmm. I got confirmation that the other two were finished uploading. If they don't show up I can try again, not that it's really all that important. lol.

This looks like an entertaining discussion.

Space - I played alto sax 4th grade through college. My lips will never be the same. I bought a pretty nice Yamaha Pro Series my senior year and quit playing. Sold it about 7 years later and bought a guitar. I remembered I used to sing pretty well  before.... so now I play acoustic (Tacoma DR-38) and also have picked up the piano again. I really like stuff by Damien Rice, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glenn Phillips, Great Big Sea, etc...

Yes, me on bass (and backing vocals, but much too hard to tell you what to listen for on the two tracks that uploaded successfully). No recordings exist of the jazz quintet. (Wish they did, the jazz quintet did much cooler stuff than the hardcore group, lol.)

Spacey san!

You music, sound good.

You music, sound, play from heart.

Play strong!

Not my style music.  No matter.  You play, I hear;  strong, feeling.

Times change.

Music not change.

Perhaps, you find music again.

My alto is a Conn. Can't remember the model name/number off the top of my head, but I paid a hell of a lot of money for it. It's a crying shame that it sits in my basement unused.

I quit and picked up the guitar because the sax is tough to play by yourself (not really a camping instrument if you will) and the whole embouchure thing. I remember picking it up once a couple years after college and my face hurt for a week after a couple hours playing.
