Title: switching to DirecTV on friday
Post by: Aske on June 25, 2008, 04:12:09 PM
so, with comcraps decision to multiplex mpeg2 HD channels down to 3:1 on 38mbps channels , the quality has gone hill, and no new channels have been added.  for less $ per month (about $30, actually) i can get 2x as many mpeg4 channels around 7-9mbps each.  maybe not better PQ, but certainly no worse. of course, i'll be dropping down from 2 to 1 dvrs, but the 1 dvr will also hold about 2x as many hours since the mpeg4 stream is smaller anyways.  with SDV and mpeg4 cable boxes at least 12-18 months away, i figure this is the only logical move.  to boot, Sal can not subscribe to Greek satellite content. anyways, getting the plus hd-dvr package, 3 months free showtime, hbo, starz, 12 months free showtime, "$300 coupon book"   *fingers crossed*

I have to admit that DirecTV has served us well.

However, you will lose signal from time to time during the heavy thunderstorms/snowstorms. Usually at the most inopportune moments.

will be keeping crapcast ultrabasic just because it keeps the internets cheaper (by about $10 a month) can always plug it in

Make sure your DVR receiver is black.  The silver ones are an older model and have "issues".

I've had DirecTV for 13 years in California, and several years before that in Connecticut.  They pretty much are teh suck as far as customer sevice.  I wanted to upgrade to an HD DVR when I got my plasma and they wouldn't offer me any kind of deal.  They give new customers pretty much everything for free, but could care less once you've signed on.

They did "install" the new HD antenna for nothing in December.  In March, I lost all my local channels.  They sent a tech out, after a 2 week wait, who told me I needed to cut down 2 oak trees that were fully leafed out and blocking the line of sight.  The 2 oaks are about 70-100 years old.  I told them they neded to install the antenna in another location since they screwed it up the first time.  Then they tried to bill me for the service call.  I got through to a customer service manager who did credit my account after a lengthy discussion.

I've literally spent hours on the phone with their tech services department trying to get things fixed via telephone.  Don't get me started on their phone tree................

Good luck.   [sm_disgust]

usa-hd has been coming in with multiple signal breakups here since dec 2007.  4-5 service calls. still broken.   i have the feeling ALL these companies have *feces* for service

Similar problems as 1putt describes, except mine was a telephone pole, and they installed the dish into my vinyl siding.

Signal great, service to fix problems, not so much.

The funny thing is I'm missing only three channels that I care about, 1 sports in hd ,TNT in hd, and one movie channel in hd, if it would have been the lifetime channel I wouldn't have cared a wit.
