Title: Fake Proposal Billboard
Post by: dystopia on June 10, 2008, 09:23:50 AM

Billboard proposal is all about the bling

Quote
When a guy named John showed up on a $5,000, high-profile billboard to propose to Jennifer, thousands of daily I-35 commuters let out a collective, “Ahhhh, isn’t that sweet!”

After all, who doesn’t appreciate a little romance wedged into these chaotic economic and social times?

Sorry, folks. Problem is John doesn’t exist and neither does Jennifer, at least not the ones depicted on the billboard. It turns out the billboard marriage proposal is a teaser for a campaign for Helzberg Diamonds engagement rings — in this case a $2,599 1-carat emerald-cut ring set in 14-karat white gold — unveiled this morning.

...
And part of what people were pondering, at least in some corners, was “Why can’t my guy be like that guy? Buy a billboard to profess his love?”

And that’s the whole point of the campaign called “That Guy.” He is a boyfriend who buys a billboard to propose; who washes and fluffs your puppy, Toodles, instead of watching the game with the guys; who insists on not one, but two coats of pink polish when he paints your toenails — all references to previous renditions of the jeweler’s “That Guy” campaign, created by Barkley, a Kansas City-based advertising agency. The focus of the campaign is, for all the guys out there who aren’t “that guy,” there’s Helzberg’s.

I've long held that the diamond industry creates false expectations for women, and unrealistic standards for men to live up to. A local jeweler used to run commercials around Valentine's day in which a guy was honestly torn between whether he should buy diamonds or chocolates for his wife and/or girlfriend. Does anyone seriously debate $50 worth of chocolate or a $1500 diamond ring? And I bought my wife a very nice engagement ring, but I didn't spend no damn 3 months salary (or whatever ridiculous amount they suggest) on the thing.

Hatex2!

Any guy that does that is gay, and is only dreaming of painting his boyfriend's toenails. [sm_devil] ;D

ROFLMAO, if this thread doesn't qualify for classic status, I don't know what does.

IIRC, washing Clive's puppies could take a week or so, although I'm not sure about the status of Mrs. Clives puppies.

Jewelry copulation is second only to make up copulation....and it is argued in some sectors that diamond jewelry copulation may even be better than make up copulation.  Though that has not been my personal experience, I'm sympathetic towards the proposition, because there is simply no denying the fact that make up with diamond jewelry copulation is the seven summits of copulation*

*please note, for scaling purposes the top of the scale is actual (not imagined) pröñ star copulation, aka the walking on Mars of copulation
