I'm talking about your generic term for athletic type shoes, not specific kinds of shoes (e.g. basketball shoes, running shoes, etc).

I grew up calling them tennis shoes, but somewhere along the way I've switched to athletic shoes. I've been known on occasion to call them sneakers as well. What do you call them? Have you noticed regional differences?

(Someone in the hall at my work just referred to them as "tennie runners," a term I haven't heard since my grandfather died, which got me wondering.)

I call them tennis shoes, but I notice as I'm getting older(and maybe it's because I live with all girls)  I usually just say shoes.

I think it is regional.  Growing up in FL we called them sneakers, and my mom called them tennie runners.

FWIW, I think of athletic shoes, as the 3 metal equivalent.

Grew up calling them trainers.  Slowly Americanized (Utahnized??) to tennis shoes / tennies.  Been known to go with Chuckies now and again.

I'm going with tennis shoes because that's what I called them growing up. However the last few years I've found myself calling them sneakers more often.

You dudes are all OLD!  You called them "tennis shoes" because there weren't any other kinds of athletic shoes back then except leather track spikes.

I just didn't want to face the real reason. Tennis shoes and cleats (football/baseball) were it.

I'm getting old.

(PS -- I grew up calling them tennis shoes, too.  But now that I have tennis shoes, running shoes, golf shoes, hiking shoes, ...   Things change.  8))

I just call them Tennis Shoes.

Sneakers for me, always have and always will. And I consder myself middle age.

Trainers, I'm not as yankified as Beattie yet.

There's still hope for me.  These are still boots even though it embarrasses my son when I say it.

Wow.  Just had a flashback.  What was that comic with the kid who had the magic boots?  It's been ages.

There was a cartoon I vaguely remember from my childhood called Sport Billy. I don't really remember the details but it had something to do with this kid who had ties to Mt. Olympus and had to go around saving sports from some evil queen or something to that effect. Anyway, it seems like he had magic boots and a bag full of magic sporting gear. Now that I have googled both it seems that it was just a happy coincidence that they were both named Billy and played sports.

So in answer to your question, I did not know.

Woah.  I looked forward to my annuals alright but maybe in a slightly less English public school sorta way.
