Title: GOLFHOS RYDER CUP, Round One FINAL Results
Post by: Clive on May 12, 2007, 06:00:34 PM
Scores are starting to come in now ...

JDerion v. 1puttpar (3)
1puttpar pars the first to jump to the early lead; 2 is halved with pars; JDerion loses 3 with a double to fall 2-down; 4 is halved, then JDerion bogeys 5 but wins it to come back to 1-down; 1puttpar wins the following two holes with natural pars to close it out.
1puttpar, 3 & 2.

Fuzzy v. BFBoy (7)
BFBoy jumps out to an early 2-up lead with net birdies; 3 is halved; Fuzzy commits a rules violation and forfeits 4 to fall 3-down after 5; 6 is halved; BFBoy scores a net birdie on 7 to close it out.
BFBoy, 4 & 3.

Clive (4) v. Campy
Campy pars 1 to jump in front; after bogeys on 2, Clive wins 3 with net par, but then quickly gives two holes away with double-bogeys to fall 2-down after 5; a net par brings Clive back to 1-down with three to play; Campy's natural birdie on 7 closes it out.
Campy, 3 & 2.

Aske v. Dunk
Halve the first with nervous bogeys; pars on the second; Dunk takes 3 with a par; bogeys on 4, pars on 5; Aske pars 6 to even the match; Dunk pars 7 to go 1-up; Aske pars 8 to bring it back to all square; Dunk EAGLES the final hole to win.
Dunk, 1-up.

Stroh v. Seamus
Stroh takes the first two holes with pars; the next two are halved with bogeys; Seamus gets hot and runs off three straight holes to pull 1-up after 7; 8 is halved with pars; and stroh takes 9 with a bogey.
Halved.

Spaceage (2) v. Tdcoly
After halving 1, Ted runs off two natural pars to take an early lead; Spaceage claws back with a bogey and a wind-aided par to even it after 5 holes; they halve 6 in bogey; Ted takes 7 with a double (Spacey pwn3d!) to go 1-up with 2 to play; Spaceage takes 8 with a natural par to even it; and then Ted pars to Spaceage's bogey on the final hole.
Tdcoly, 1-up.

Teed v. Salamander (2)
Teed takes par to win the first hole; 2 is halved with doubles; Teed cards a couple bogeys while Sal, clearly suffering from appendicitis or something, takes ... um, a couple high numbers; 5 is halved; Sal wins 6 with a gross par to pull to 2-down with three to go; the players halve 7 with ugly doubles, putting Sal dormie; Teed wins 8 by a stroke.
Teed, 3 & 1.

Spanky (2) v. Uisce Beatha
Both players stumble with opening double-bogeys; after the crowds grow disinterested and leave, Uisce rattles off par-bogey-double to go 3-up after 4; Spanky takes 5 with a double (Uisce pwn3d!), but gives it right back with his own double on 6 to stay at 3-down and go dormie; they halve 7 with bogeys and it's all over.  Shame, too, as Spanky went birdie (gross), birdie (net) on the closing two holes.
Uisce, 3 & 2.

MFAWG (1) v. Walfredo
Walfredo bolts out with par wins on the first two holes; after halving the next two, MFAWG cards a net birdie to bring it to 1-down after 5; Walfredo wins the next with par to go 2-up with three to play; the players halve 7 with bogeys, taking MFAWG dormie; Walfredo pars 8 and wins.
Walfredo, 3 & 1.

GolferRay v. Julie (6)
The first two holes are halved, then Ray takes 3 and 4 with natural pars; Julie bounces back with net birdie/par to bring the match all-square after 6; Ray pars 7 to go 1-up; players take bogeys to halve 8 and put Julie dormie; Julie wins the last with a net bogey.  [EDITED TO CORRECT SCORING ERROR]
Halved.

Team TIT -- 8
Team Foreskin -- 2
Two matches still to tally.

This post will be updated as scores come in.

I blame Tiger.

Of course, the fabulous triple I took on 2 didn't help, but it's really all Tiger's fault.

Short game was on, (not the usual type of play), and when got in jail, I didn't try the Phil or Tiger kind of escape shots like I normally do, (only without success).
Also put a three year old set of irons into play.
Great round Fuzzy. Sorry.

Post by: Dunk on May 13, 2007, 08:55:13 AM
Well, being all square after 8 holes I knew the pressure was on.  I figured a birdie on the 9th would secure the win, so I decided to let it out.

The 9th is a 485 yard par-5 dogleg left, but there's trouble left all the way.  I hit a good drive to the corner, about 240-250 yards. That left me about 225 yards to the green.  I hit a good shot with my 16º utility and ended up about 5 yards short and left of the green.

I was pretty sure that if I could get up-and-down for a birdie I could secure the match.  I lined up the chip, a 45 footer with a big left-to-right break, took a couple of practice strokes and let 'er go.  The ball was tracking all the way.  About half-way there, I knew I'd have a short putt for bird.  But the ball kept tracking...tracking...IT'S IN THE HOLE!!!  [sm_shock] ;D

The amazing thing is, I eagled the same hole during the previous round.  For that one, I hit a slightly better drive, and lasered my utility club to about 8" from the hole.  A kick-in eagle!   :D

Yup, my round sucked more then it looked. Between the rain soaked fairways and bunkers and my general inability to hit the ball in a consistant direction I'm suprised I lasted to 7.

Woohooooooo.

Go TIT!!!

Fabulous effort from everybody, thanks to all who played.

There are still 2 results to finalise and they could make a big difference to how it plays.

I was actually quite excited reading the individual results and had to force myself not to skip to the end to see the finish.

Thanks to both teams and Clive, great deal everyone.

Round 2 here we come.

You caught me on my best round in my entire life.  I shot a friggin 73 that day (+2 on the front and even on the back).  3 bogeys, 1 birdie and 14 pars with a 2 hour rain delay after the 3rd hole.  My previous best score was a 78 which I've had a few times.  It was weird how well I was playing.

Oh yeah Clive, after posting my last two rounds my index went down to 9.4 if you want to adjust it for scoring.

Cheers *funbags*. [sm_beertoast]

A little statistical presentation:

Average player course handicap:
Team TIT -- 10 (would have been 9 if not for the Sal-for-twoiron swap)
Team Foreskin -- 9

Average player score to par:
Team TIT -- 9-over
Team Foreskin -- 10-over

Total scores relative to handicap strokes:
Team TIT -- 9 under
Team Foreskin -- 12 over

Oddly, in the most lopsided match (BFBoy over Fuzzy, 4&3), both players were the same number of strokes (3) better than their course handicaps.

I'll leave it to Uisce to calculate the odds of so many players out of twenty shooting their handicap or better.  [sm_devil]

Hey, I said out of twenty, not ten.

Nine players.  Three on one team and six on the other, if anyone's keeping count.  But perhaps it'll equalize next round.

(FWIW, I knew I'd be above mine, as my index has been trending upward for over a year now and I'm not playing to a 20, either.  I shot eight strokes OVER my handicap.  :'()

It was also 9 holes.

I went 37-43. Right on my handicap. So my 37 was a little misleading from that angle. And, if I go 43-37 I get beat even worse.  [sm_shock]

I really just took a good guess at mine, using the last 3 rounds I played as my benchmark.  I didn't play that well on my GHRC round, but scored well due to an unusually good short game.  I wouldn't have a problem adjusting my hcap if it makes things fairer, but I really don't expect to be shooting those scores very often.

I tried to take a good guess at mine also, I found an excel file showing my golf scores since coming back from back surgery and would gladly submit it for review, but it will probably show that my handicap should be higher than 20 based on my last 10 scores, it wasn't until my GHRC round that my swing started to feel like it used to (15 hdcp).

Clearly I feel guilty, sandbagging is an evil word, and there is no honor in the offense, I'm so glad we didn't post the back 9, the shame would be unbearable.  :sad3:

Title: Re: GOLFHOS RYDER CUP, Round One FINAL Results
Post by: Clive on May 14, 2007, 05:01:10 PM
I think everyone was pretty honest with the handicap numbers they turned in.  We're a small group here, so it's a lot less likely someone would lie.  And it's a team competition, so one person sandbagging isn't really going to sway the event.

Like campy said, it was over nine holes instead of eighteen, so there's even more slack in the system than if we'd been playing full rounds.

Of course, those of you who bettered your handicaps by 5+ shots WILL be "adjusted".  And I do not mean that in the pronographic way, either. (Stroh)

I actually shot RIGHT on my number for the round (86) although I don't really know how to adjust for the relatively low slope rating of the course so I might actually be a little high.

That triple really *fudge*ed me up, FWIW. I don't think I had a double on the card until the last 2 holes (that 18th pin placement was BRUTAL!)

Just for my justification, I played this course, (Creekwood Golf Course, Columbia Station, Ohio)
My 9 hole hcp alternated between 11 and 12. Since Sept. 06, this was only the 3rd time out.
Some reasons I might have played better than normal:
1. I put a three year old set of irons in the bag. (Dynacraft 325Ls w/ Harrison Premier Gold Stiff shafts)
2. Good reaction from the ball, (Nike Ignite), especially chipping and putting.
3. When I did put myself into a tight spot, I pitched out safely rather than my usual 'hero' type of shot, (which never works out)
4. I got luckier than hell.  [sm_shock] [sm_dontknow] :D

Title: Re: GOLFHOS RYDER CUP, Round One FINAL Results

Guys, I just posted the stat snapshot to show how the teams performed comparatively.  I didn't intend it to be a slam on Team TIT or a call-out of anyone who shot better than his handicap.  Like I said, a third of the LOSING team players bettered their handicaps, too.

3. When I did put myself into a tight spot, I pitched out safely rather than my usual 'hero' type of shot, (which never works out)
So I get to the eighth tee, thinking that if I'm still in the match, it'd be close.  I get a stroke on each of 8 and 9.  Number 8 is a 526-yard par-5, pretty wide off the tee but into the wind; it then rises gently uphill all the way from landing area to bunkered green.  I decide to play it as a par-6 gross, calculating that three 140-yard shots get me to 100 out, where I can play it as a pitch-and-putt par-3.  But the fairway is so wide, so inviting ...  I take driver and 6-iron to the teebox (the carry to the fairway meant I needed more than 140 on the first ball).  I vacillate.  I decide on driver, as the fairway is so wide, so inviting, the headwind so strong, and I hit driver pretty well in warmup.  Aim down the right rough (I'm hitting anything from a straight ball to a snap-hook these days), pumping myself up with the thought that I can hit my normal shot and just dare the course to make it find trouble.  I hit a snap-hook into the trees.

We won't talk about 9, except to say that I conceded it.

My personal best for nine holes is even par. My personal best for 18 is +5. It's a lot easier to stay hot for 9 than 18, so I'm not totally surprised that so many people posted red numbers.

I believe I said I tripled 2 (anybody want to trade a Ping 56* for some dog crap or maybe  belly button lint?)

Other than that, it was bogey-par until 17 and 18.

So there!

I love all you guys. Well, except TFT, I like him but not "like him" like him. I keep telling him, but dude can't take a hint.

I just don't get how you were gay as hell one day and 'cured' the next?

In time I will get over it.

My personal best for nine holes is even par. My personal best for 18 is +5. It's a lot easier to stay hot for 9 than 18, so I'm not totally surprised that so many people posted red numbers.

That's definitely the key.

Also, if the back 9s were used from the same day the match might have gone the other way, like spacey.

FWIW. I don't think I had a double on the card until the last 2 holes (that 18th pin placement was BRUTAL!)
:-X

It was also 9 holes.

I went 37-43. Right on my handicap. So my 37 was a little misleading from that angle. And, if I go 43-37 I get beat even worse.  [sm_shock]

Probably not. I'm sure my true game would have shone in the second nine. :sad3: [sm_shock] [sm_redface]

BTW, congrats to everyone who played. It sounds like there was some fierce competition even though many miles separated the competitors.  [sm_beertoast] [sm_thumbsup2]
