Title: Place of Birth
Post by: Uisce Beatha on May 15, 2007, 03:14:50 PM
Last night I Wiki'd the town where I made my first (rather abrupt and somewhat urgent) appearance.  It's a little place named Tidworth and I don't think I've been back since.

Anyway, with a current population of about 9K it boasts another son even more famous than me.  It's the dude who sings that "You're Beautiful" song.  James something.

Also, when I was born it was in Hampshire.  Now it's in Wiltshire.

That's all I've got boys and girls.  Pretty damn boring even though I stretched it for all it's worth.  Surely someone has a better story like maybe Spacey was born in Thistle, Utah which is now at the bottom of a lake.

My wife's birthplace is more interesting from a golfing angle but we'll get to that. Me:

Rochester, MN

Home of the Mayo Clinic. Every significant world leader with a prostrate problem has been there.

Lea Thompson - actress
Sheree Wilson - actress
Darrell Thompson - NFL running back (barely)
Shjon Podein - member of Stanley Cup winning Colorado Avalanche
Eric Strobel - member of 1980 Miracle on Ice team
Harry Blackmun served as resident counsel for Mayo Clinic pre-Supreme Court
Frank B. Kellogg had a law office there.
Richard Sears (Sears and Roebuck) was born just outside of town.

My wife was born in Austin MN. Home of Hormel and SPAM. The spiced ham meat stuff.

Check this out:

John Madden
Tom Lehman
Lee Janzen

and Conrad Ray grew up in Austin (born across the state line in Iowa). He went to Stanford where he was a college teammate of Tiger, Notah Begay and Casey Martin and where he is now head coach.

Vadnais Heights, MN really has nothing great about it - at least in the wiki article.  It's borders are the following cities: Little Canada, Shoreview, White Bear Lake, Gem Lake, and Maplewood.  We lived close to the Little Canada border.  Well, actually, close is an understatement.  Edgerton is the separating road, we lived on the Vadnais Heights side.  Little Canada some interesting facts along with some outlandish statements.  However, it sounds hacked so how much of it is fact [sm_dontknow] ?

From the wiki article:

In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition by the United States government. At the time others countries also laid claim to what is now Minnesota. The Canadians had various settlements in Minnesota, the largest of which was 10 miles North of Saint Paul, MN. President Thomas Jefferson decided that the best way to avoid war, was to allow the land to remain under Canadian control. Therefor all the residents of Little Canada are full Canadian citizens, with access to free health care, signs in both English and French and pride in it's citizens such as Wayne Gretzky and the band Rush. If you ever happen to visit Little Canada you must first exchange your dollars for Canadian currency at the Sinclair gas station on Little Canada Road and 35E.

 [sm_rolling]

What made you think it seemed hacked?  ;)

I was born in Hardin County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia, of undistinguished families--second families, perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks.... My father ... removed from Kentucky to ... Indiana, in my eighth year.... It was a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. There I grew up.... Of course when I came of age I did not know much. Still somehow, I could read, write, and cipher ... but that was all.

Thank you Mr. Lincoln for that well crafted blurb.

P.S.  I hope the bears didn't chomp on your a$$ too much.
