Title: NFL 2008-2009 Season
Post by: Teed on April 16, 2008, 07:36:19 AM
NFL schedules were released yesterday.  What's your prediction for win/losses for your team this season?   I say we go 7-9 this year.

Here's a quick link to print out your team's schedule.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/print/schedule?team=bal

Give Troy Smith the chance!!

The Patsies get to play the weak-ass NFC West in addition to their requisite double-dipping of the AFC East. That's a guaranteed 8/9-win season right there. They also cycle through the AFC West which was especially weak last year with KC and OAK having really crap seasons.

maybe 9-7...  maybe yet 10-6 if they sellout their draft future (say all of the 2009 draft) to get 2 1st round top 15 linemen

At first pass I'd say 8-8, but 9 wins could win the division, so if they can steal one it could be interesting. That's not to say the division is weak, but they're going to kick the crap out of each other.

Pats schedule, based on 2007 opponent's records 99-157.

Steelers schedule, based on 2007 opponent's records 153-103.

Nice job handing the Pats another meatball season.

Hey, unlike Parker, T.Jack didn't have double the fumbles as he did TD's. :o ;D

This off season the Vikes have signed:

Bernard Berrian
Madieu Williams
Thomas Tapeh
Michael Boulware
Maurice Hicks
Gus Frerotte

Smaller depth upgrading signings:

Benny Sapp
Kenderick Allen
Dallas Sartz
Ellis Wyms
Derrick Pope

And have the best RB in the NFL, one of the best o-lines, if the Allen trade goes through, best d-line, which would automatically make the secondary a whole lot better because they don't have to try to cover guys for 5 seconds every play, plus the draft ... and you think they will finish with he same record as last year?

so what does that say about peterson, who fumbles more than parker (by far!!)  and who can't even blame it on the weather 8 games a year

 ::)

By far?

Parker had 4 fumbles and 2 TD's with 345 touches.

AD had 4 fumbles and 13 TD's with 273 touches.

Projecting the stats out to make Peterson have the same amount of touches as Parker had, AD would have only had 1 extra fumble and 2 extra TD's than before (since we projected the fumbles, we have to project the TD's too).

So what does it say about Peterson? It says that with the stats projected out to make AD have the same amount of touches as Parker the stats would have been:

Parker: 4 fumbles and 2 TD's

AD: 5 fumbles and 16 TD's

Far more fumbles? Try 1.

And 14 more TD's.

Parker.Pwn3d.

parker
total  .0147
lost .00784

peterson
total .0156
lost .01167

multiplying peterson over to parkers career stats (for touches) and he will have 4 more lost fumbles at the same point in his career.

when you consider 1/2 of his games are indoor, that is simply unacceptable, regardless of his exceptional TD potential/performance.   lost fumbles often translate to 10, if not 14 point game changing swings.  not something an 8-8 level team routinely survives .

tds: .023 / touch  vs .051   (yes,  peterson has a big edge here,  partly due to himself, partly due to the vikes not having many other scoring threats- that is to say, i'd guess any great RB you plugin with the vikes roster remaining otherwise intact would score with a greater frequency than parker for the steelers)

Title: Re: NFL 2008-2009 Season

among the modern elite greats of all time

lost/touch

smith: .005
sanders: .004 (probably the best analog as he also got to play 9 games a year minimum in perfect indoor conditions where fumbling is truly due to him only)
tomlinson: .0035

is this to say that i think peterson sucks, or that he doesn't have an almost unlimited future potential?  no.

it just says that he does have at least one huge flaw in his game.  he coughs the ball up and loses it a lot  so far.   the truly great players don't (or learned how not to) do this over their careers.   he NEEDS to learn to do the same.    losing 2-3x as many fumbles as the above players is what will help keep the vikes out of the playoffs  routinely, regardless of whatever else he does to make himself look equal to them

And how many more TD's? ;D

when you consider 1/2 of his games are indoor, that is simply unacceptable, regardless of his exceptional TD potential/performance .

But yet 2 TD's and 4 fumbles is okay for someone that is supposed to be a probowler. ???

tds: .023 / touch  vs .051   (yes,  peterson has a big edge here,  partly due to himself, partly due to the vikes not having many other scoring threats)

Even our backup RB Taylor had 5 more TD's than Parker, and T.Jack out rushed Parker by one TD too. ;D

I think 99 percent of people say that around 60 percent of statistics can usually almost nearly always say what you want to look like you believe your point may or may not be.  At least half the time.

that's ok torpedo, keep up with the blind hero worship syndrome and lose sight of the greater perspective.

here's some more "meaningless" stats:

since parker joined the steelers: 3 playoffs, 2 division titles, 2 AFC title game apperances, and a Super Bowl victory

since peterson joined the vikes: no playoffs

we'll compare these after peterson has had 4 seasons with the vikes.  [sm_beertoast]
my prediction,  the ratio of parkers superbowl yards to petersons will still be infinite

Parker's the lame one, double the fumbles? He shouldn't be in the NFL. ;)

Parker's TD rate is artificially low and by a significant amount.  Inside the five he doesn't really even play.  Bettis was plugged in to ram in the score and after him it was Najeh.  Remember when Parker ran something like 85 yards only to be knocked out at the one.  Someone else got the TD.  Parker almost led the league in yards (probably would have barring the late season injury) but he has to get his scores on 30 yard runs.  He's lucky he got two.  Plus, as aske mentioned, the Steelers have other threats such as a quarterback and receivers.   [sm_devil]

I like Peterson, how could you not?  But it's folly to compare TD stats between a player whose team absolutely depends on him for scoring against another whose team routinely gives him a breather in scoring situations.

Torp, it's a major foul the Vikings haven't sent you a free AD jersey by now.   ;)

Yep, he's not an overall back like AD who can take it to the house on any given play, but *also* run through an entire defense to get the short goal line TD's. 8)

Remember when Parker ran something like 85 yards only to be knocked out at the one.

Slow poke. ;) ;D

Parker almost led the league in yards (probably would have barring the late season injury) but he has to get his scores on 30 yard runs.

No he would have got 2nd, because as long as were playing "ifs" then if AD would have started the 4 games he didn't and not gotten injured AD would have been the leagues leading rusher ... as a rookie.

He's lucky he got two.  Plus, as aske mentioned, the Steelers have other threats such as a quarterback and receivers.   [sm_devil]

They did last year too, that is a bad excuse to drop down to 13 less TD's than the year before.

But it's folly to compare TD stats between a player whose team absolutely depends on him for scoring against another whose team routinely gives him a breather in scoring situations.

AD was running against 8-9 even 10 men in the box all game long, being the only focus, and still got 13 TD's, with the Steelers and teams focusing also on Big Ben, (something Peterson doesn't get) Parker should have been able to get at least get a respectable amount of TD's ... at least not double the fumbles. Not that 4 is a lot of fumbles, but for any starter (especially a probowl RB) to get less TD's than fumbles is not too good.

Torp, it's a major foul the Vikings haven't sent you a free AD jersey by now.   ;)

I know, mind telling them that? Maybe even suggest one of everyone on the team? They wouldn't go to waste with me. ;D

So since you have me on ignore (which is readily obvious by your quoting me :D ) and you can't see this anyway:

If the Vikings don't go 19-0 this season would you at least, half the time, talk realistically when it comes to sports?

I know all about being a fan and having high hopes (I am from Buffalo) but it would be nice to have an intelligent conversation with you regarding these things instead of what we get now. You are a very intelligent person and I know loves football as do most of us. Being able to hear your side when you are rationally thinking would be very enjoyable. Maybe then you might take me off ignore.
