Title: It's official. I'm am one of the top 25
Post by: Walfredo on August 01, 2008, 09:34:23 AM
mortal intertube resource wasting sinners in the company.  Those sneaky bastards starting tracking Wed.  Didn't make that list but I did make the list for Thursday.  Weighing in with a grand total of 44,000,000 bytes transfered.  Not sure where on the list I am but my entire floor did really well.  The new girl on our team was on both lists and another guy got on one.  3 of the 5 underwriters made this list too.

Such a feat would not have been possible without you guys.   [sm_buddies]

BTW, I'm in the internet cafe downstairs.   [sm_hide]

OMG.  over the course of the 8 hour day (surely some traffic was legit use, too, but we'll ignore that...)  you used.... wait for it.... 11.9 Kbps    (for those old net users amongst us, that's less than 2400 baud   LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

if you are average (of the top 25) you used collectively...298Kbps
OMG, our network is going to collapse!!!!  the base level DSL is too expensive for us!

LMAO

when winblows has a massive SP, etc... do they deploy cdr's to save everyone from downloading 200MB files?

You're company is going about this all wrong - just because you transferred more bytes than others, does not mean it was wasteful.  It also does not even mean its a lot.

I have ran into several frustrations with the filters my company uses, but we don't count bytes - its all about the content your transferring.  Not perfect, but a better way.

Of course, that content means I may lose my Golfhos access from work one day - I already lost a few forums to the filter.  Whats frustrating, is that they attempt to block ALL forums and blogs - even if they would benefit my work.  I've had to get the filters changed on more than one occasion  [sm_devil]

[threadjack of non-epic proportions]

My work tried to deploy a content- or ratings-based filter a while back.  Much hue and cry, all ignored by a grinning IT guy (who states that NOTHING that isn't work-related should EVER be done using a work machine/resource).  It was technically possible to have a site whitelisted, although IT Guy basically would not do it.  You had to be willing to stand in front of your direct report and ask HIM(/HER) to OK the whitelisting.  I got several law-related sites whitelisted that way.

If you gots to have your pröñ and are willing to plead your case to The Man, more power to you.

How much does your job require you to be on the web?

do you ever log how much windows updates + antivirus updates + various other legit software programs   transfer/day ?  it's more than you might guess

But essentially every machine is doing auto-downloads of updates and whatnot -- that will just establish the baseline.  You need to be requesting stuff (sorry to use jargon like that) to rise above the noise and make the America's Most Internet-Abusing list.

My guess is that cutting out YouTube would likely drop him off the list.

korprit merka does not operate that way within businesses of size.  The IS department will download it once, test the living chit out of it, then package it up for distribution to all the PCs requiring it.  This will happen at night, with no user intervention or knowledge.  We just come to work in the morning with everything running smoothly.

We do it that way because we're stoopid, corrupt, money stealing hags that deserve some sort of laced rubber dildo up our asses  [sm_devil] ;)

but different machines might have different programs. that said, sure youtube burns some bandwidth.

Well, they aren't blocked, so I guess korprit merka (at least the one I live in) doesn't hate children.  I was just mocking the people that think they have to have them up for the entire day.

And last I checked, I can still get to my Pandora station - the filters ain't all that bad  :)

I've never needed 'backup' to get filters changed - HTFU!

Sorry to say but we performed the productivity calculations and determined we needed to crack down here at Blader Industries, Inc., too.

Except for a small group in our Research and Development subsidiary who are conducting important groundbreaking research related to stimulation of the female libido, who are allowed unfettered access to the intergoogles.

Let's just say that is something of a pet project of a certain CEO etc and so forth and so on.

It doesn't really at all.

youtube has always been blocked.  And all software updates are handled by IT and occur once a week generally.

Everyone just surfs news sites, shopping sites, message boards and what not.  The count every page viewed and all the embedded adds on certain sites tally up.

Today was brutal but I didn't work anymore than I usually do.  Just was away from my desk a lot more.

Somehow that doesn't suprise me...
