Title: A enjoyable round
Post by: andylo on February 04, 2007, 02:50:05 PM
I have a very enjoyable round yesterday that I shot - 98 off the stick (for my defense) on a very difficult golf course.

But its not the result, or some good shots, or some lucky chip ins that make the round enjoyable. (In fact I dumped 3 balls into the piss, if not 4... and most of my drive didn't lift off the sea level for more than 3 meters  :sad3:)

But the company was great. I got SMSed on Saturday by this guy who are not on my contact list to invite me for a game. Dunno actually who it is I reply "Yes" to him and try to make myself mysirable  ;D

Turn out it was quite surprises who called me, a dude I meet in driving range about a little while ago who I gave I little advice on equipment. Suprised he really put my name and phone # in his phone, and actually called me.

Long story short its a tough course with greens have lots of slopes and winds blowing from 4 directions on the same hole. Tough conditions... and both 4 of us are ABSOLUTE hacks. Hitting off the social tee doesn't help to make the game any easier  ;D block slice/thin/duff shots, topped most of my drives (which I later find out my swing tempo was the cause) To top it off these guys has NO freaking idea how the rules run. Hit a OOB and they jsut hit another where the ball goes in, every ball goes to water hazzle become a free drop from where it goes in. Pretty much the only penalty is the ball they loss. One of the guy hit 2 balls OOB an ended up "bogey" on a par 4! HAHAHAA

But so what, there was lots and lots and lots of laughters, heaps of interesting conversations and crappola loads of sledge that even foreigner like myself can understand. Its a 5.5 hours hacking round, with NO boring bit.  ;D

End result, I am 98 and they are like all at their low 80s! Yeah right!  ;) ;D

I believe they enjoy my company and ask if I would be free next week. For a long time I played fairly competitive golf (to myself... I am the devil to beat) and I almost forget how much fun golf can be, until these guys reminded me.

So I said "See you next week" before I left.  ;D

Andy, welcome to the game of golf that most people play.
I call it "Fantasy Golf".
I played last week with a friend that plays by his own set of (no) rules.
On the 1st Tee, he hooked his tee shot badly and it was obviously OB. After the others in our group had teed off, I asked him "Do you want to hit another one?"
He said "Why?"
I said "because you went OB".
He looked at me like I was nuts and replied "I don't give a Rats Azz.......I don't keep score anyway".

However, at the end of the day, he did indeed have a score- a rather tidy 82, which the other 3 of us in the group figured was at least within 10 strokes of the truth.
All you can do is laugh.... :D

I guess as long as we are not anal about the rules and scores we all with have a enjoyable round. After all its a social round, who cares :)

I think it's much more the company than being strict the Rules. I used to play a lot of golf with a coworker before I moved east.  Great guy, really laid back and relaxed, and just fun to be with.  He kept score (I didn't, but I'd tell him what I got on a hole if he asked).  I followed the rules, and I'd say the rounds with him were both the lowest-scoring and the most enjoyable I've ever had.

On the other hand, I tied my PB playing as a single thrown in with three guys who knew each other and weren't especially friendly to me upon hearing that I worked at a law firm.  Great score, but lousy round.  (Lest you wonder, I used to play a lot of golf as a single back then, and the reception was usually much warmer.)

I played with a group of friends over the past summer and had one of them forgetting about OB shots, penalties, duffs, etc. ( about 10 -15 strokes) My cart buddy was getting pi$$ed and I told him not to worry about it,,, Until the forgetful guy gets to work the next day and tells everyone he beat me by 2 strokes :punchballs:  Serves me right for not letting cart buddy call him on it.
