Title: Who's Always Hiding?
Post by: stroh on January 17, 2007, 08:39:23 PM
Every time I look at the main page, I see : Users, lurkers, spiders, and 1, or 2 members hiding.

What's that about?

If a member looks at the site without logging in does that constitute "hiding?"  I sometimes drop by to see if there are any new messages of interest.  Sometimes I don't log in if I don't see anything I want to reply to.

No, then you would be counted as a lurker I believe. :)

Yep.  I wonder if there isn't something in profile "settings" that does: hide online status from others.  Or something like that.

The hider, may not even know that he/she is hiding. [sm_shock]

Yeah, it would be in the settings but it isn't default, so they would have had to change it.

Ah.  I think I figured it out.

It has to be The Uber Reichsmarschal(l) in charge of the ministry of death squads, and Help and Site Suggestions.

I just found it. It is a check box in your account settings.

I just hid. It was dark and scary so I came back out.

What's that about?
Is there a difference between the list at the bottom of the home page and the member list (sorted by online status)?

I don't know.  That's a good question.  One of the hiders is the admin account since I mainly use that account for site administration and maintenance.  I'll logon with it now to see how where it shows up.

No.  I have cross referenced them several times.

Oh yeah, I made a change related to this yesterday.  If someone has more than 1,000 posts, they now show up as grey in the "who's online" list and also the "who's online" page.

No real reason for it, just testing out the setting.  Most sites that use this feature seem to put prolific posters in a bright color to make them stand out, but I thought it would be interesting to turn that on its head and make high post count folks show up in a fainter color.

I'll probably change it back so that everyone shows up as the same color again, I don't want it to end up like the users online list at golfdiscussions where there are so many colors it's hard to read.

I think by making them less obvious is a good thing,... who needs to know who all the 'post padders' are... :o

lol, I don't see myself smiting anyone any time soon. Me going out on a jihad is out of the question.
