Here I am breezing through 5th Grader.  Totally pwning the blonde pregnant chick(although to be fair, she was just a plain idiot), and smoking the comb-over orange farmer, and leaving my wife agape at my Scarecrow like post sheepskin performance.

All of a sudden:  Bam!  4th grade English.  What is the infinitive of the verb "went"?

Uh, come again?  What the *fudge* is that?  I ain't never  heard of that.  Went?  Left?  Leaved?  Split?

pretty easy to answer if you have a combined  latin+spanish schooling of about 20 class-years.

Or if you watched Star Trek regularly, you'd hear a split infinitive in every episode:

It's been a loooong freaking time, but I seem to remember studying that *feces* somewhere between the 5th and 8th grades.  Woulda stumped me now, though.

My third-year German teacher was going to teach us future perfect tense.  However, she said that after four years of German, we would never have had the need to use it.

Sad aside re: splitting the infinitive: I find myself not splitting it in my formal writings, but not caring all that much otherwise.
