Title: Effects of Those Sticks And Stones?
Post by: Clive on November 28, 2007, 11:56:17 AM
Holy crap, some of you guys posting in the Broken Bones thread sound like you grew up in Beirut.  In five intensive years of karate, I broke one toe and got a bloody nose once.  That's it.

What, if any, lingering effects do your past (childhood) injuries currently visit upon you?

From birth to 18th birthday, I never broke a bone and received a grand total of five stitches (accidentally put my left hand through the glass pane of a storm door, took a piece of glass into my wrist).  No after-effects from it.

OTOH, I injured my neck in a car accident when I was about 5, and it's become a daily issue.

Mine is I had to get a bigger wedding ring to fit over my knukle, on the bright side I now have a simple nervous habbit of spinning my ring on my finger.

Broken elbow: I don't have full range of motion in my left elbow and wrist, some lingering nerve issues that extend down into my hands and fingers.

Broken ankle: A slight limp that comes and goes as the temperature rises and falls, also seems to accompany sprains.

Surgery to repair cleft lip: left a portion of the left side of my upper lip and cheek partially paralyzed. Most obvious when I say anything that starts with or contains the letter "s."

Other than that, just the usual psychological issues that come with being a middle child and having been born in the early 70s.

The only nagging injury I have is my right elbow.  I injured it pitching every year in High School finally tearing the ulnar tendon with a dislocated ulnar nerve.  It moves over my funny bone every time I move my arm.  I needed Tommy John surgery to continue with baseball so I choose to quit and never had the surgery.  It healed for the most part but still I aggrevate it at times usually golfing.  The weather changes also really effect it.  Sometimes my right hand goes numb for no reason.  Sometimes it goes numb and/or hurts after I take a massive chunk divot.

Throw a beard on him and the resemblance is nearly uncanny.

[edit]Holy *feces*, that was a big picture. Never mind.

LOL

Did you see Family Guy this week?  Peter asks Meg's would-be suiter, "Do you ever lay on your arm until it goes numb, then play with yourself and pretend it is someone else?"

Nothing that I know of (like I said, would I?)

Knees are shot from roughly 85,000 mogul runs.  My left one sometimes just turns to water without notice and I hit the deck.  So far this hasn't happened on stairs or carrying furniture around.

[sm_shock]  Wow. I did the same trying to open a kitchen window. 3 stitches in the wrist.

My knees bother me from time to time but not from a particular accident. Just years of playing sports especially hoops. Nothing major though.

After 30 years of soccer and counting, a dozen years in martial arts (kicks place a tremendous amount of stress on knee joints), and general sports activity - my knees make funny popping and grinding sounds (without hurting though).  I had ACL replacement about 7 years ago (which led to my interest in golf - soccer was going to be too much one day.... soon - needed something else).  I do not believe that the ACL replcement has anything to do with my knee condition though - the persistent stress over the years was doing this regardless.

I've left my head/mind out of this, much like Uisce - I just don't wanna know.

Other than some lasting affects from a car accident when I was 4, nothing.  Unless you count scars, but they don't any after-affects.  Well, except for the scar on my elbow, that is.  And there's no pain involved, just people asking me, "What's on your elbow?"

I have scars. They run deep.

It all has to do with 4 Superbowl losses, in a row.
