Title: No-Backswing golf swing
Post by: dystopia on August 13, 2007, 01:19:15 PM
This is the cover story on September's Golf Magazine.  The technique where you start with the club already back like a baseball batter.

Anyone ever try to swing this way before, even just messing around in the backyard or at the range?

(yeah I know it's a bad idea to read too much into tips from the golf magazines, but I'm curious if anyone has tried this)

Who's the pro who has a funky setup with the club pointed straight out in front of him at waist level?

That's goofy too.

I've done the swing like whatever-Adam-Sandler-was-called-in-that-movie.  We used to goof around with it in high school in the late 70s and early 80s.  We could hit the ball surprisingly well with that technique, although I did eventually crack the neck of my driver.

Dave Pelz also describes a technique where one pre-c0cks the wrists (club in front, I guess), then takes the arms back and swings as normal from there.  Used when the backswing is restricted.  I tried it once on the course when jammed ... and it worked just like my regular swings.  And I mean the good ones!

This is actually a drill poularized by Seve Ballesteros and Jim Flick. It helps teach proper wrist c*ck and helps with swing plane.

Both of the pros I've taken lessons with approve of it highly and told me to 'keep it in the bag'.

There's a pro who uses it on the course.  Seems like he's a 100-125 guy but he's a regular.
