Title: Not just a Negro...
Post by: MFAWG on March 20, 2007, 10:01:49 AM
A MAGIC Negro...

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-ehrenstein19mar19,0,5335087.story?coll=la-opinion-center

Quote
Obama the 'Magic Negro'
The Illinois senator lends himself to white America's idealized, less-than-real black man.

I'd have posted this on FIGS, but I wanted to be sure that Wish saw the 'To Sir With Love' reference:

Quote
Poitier really poured on the "magic" in "Lilies of the Field" (for which he won a best actor Oscar) and "To Sir, With Love" (which, along with "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," made him a No. 1 box-office attraction). In these films, Poitier triumphs through yeoman service to his white benefactors. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is particularly striking in this regard, as it posits miscegenation without evoking ****. (Talk about magic!)

I'm confused as to the point of this thread.

Sorry MFAWG.  ???

It's a little bit of a running joke between me and Wish.

'To Sir With Love' is her favorite movie, which is absolute proof that she is indeed a she.

Also, I just find the phrase: 'Magic Negro' amusing, although the concept behind the phrase is illuminating.

That's the totality of 'The Point', which I thought we had determined wasn't really necessary.... ;D

Does anyone in the year 2007, and under the age of 94, honestly still use the term "Negro"?

Evidently, the Negro writing the column does....

I find it offensive. Difference of opinion I guess.

Unless YOU are an african american, this may be just as offensive. IMO

Is it the use of the word, or the context?

'Magic African American' wouldn't have quite the same ring, would it?

The term "Magical Negro" was coined a long time ago. I realize the author is using it in context and not as an expression of his own creation. I guess my bewilderment over modern usage of the term "Negro" is unrelated to the context of the article.
