Title: McCain, complete and utter netwit
Post by: twoiron on July 14, 2008, 02:18:20 PM
John McCain has admitted he never uses email and has to be shown websites, as he is only just learning to get online.

I'm not sayin' he's gotta rock Call of Duty 6 hours a day but if you're hold the highest office in the land, and run mudder farkin' 'merka you had at least be able to Yahoo.

Oh, on second thought, think we can get him on here?

I'd say if you're a Presedential Candidate then anything involving spanking and/or cheerleaders is a lock.

[pause bashing]
My wife's grandparents are McCain's age, they own a computer (bought for them in the hope that family could communicate and keep up to date via email), but I don't believe they EVER use it.

Exactly how much time do y'all expect the President of the United States to spend surfing the web?
[resume bashing]

I don't expect the president to surf 24/7, nor to be an IT pro. nor do I expect that of anyone in that age range.  I would however like him/her/it (as an elected executive official of the highest power) to have a rudimentary understanding of how the device is used by millions and millions of computer/internet users who could be potentially affected in very adverse ways if he signs bills into law that are anti-consumer due completely to his sheer ignorance on the topic. just as he should have at least a rudimentary understanding that arabs=/=persians, sunnis=/=shiites, that milk is now $5 a gallon, etc.

Milk is $5 a gallon?!

Seriously, I DON'T expect him to have some innate understanding of how a random law might intersect Web usage.  I expect him to have people around him who do.  Any person elected to office will have some areas of expertise, some areas of moderate understanding, and a *feces*-ton number of areas of essentially little personal familiarity.  Why would a President's understanding of A&M Records v. Napster be so more valuable to the country than any number of other things?

if it's that abstract/technical, sure he needs advisors.  but he has to, for example, understand what 'email' is before he can even be advised. that's the problem as I see it. just like while maybe he doesnt need to know how napster works, he should understand the general concept of what 'file sharing' is.   just like he should know the very basic differences in various forms of islam/christianity/etc.  i'm not asking for a world expert in every topic. just enough common sense and common background to make decisions after being advised.

Through the Rehnquist era I think only 2 Supreme Court Justices used a computer for anything at all.  The Roberts/Alito additions may have changed the equation a bit, but it would still be a 5/4 favor towards 'never used a PC'.

And by the 'stay in touch' mantra - should they not all drive their own cars, punch a time clock, stand in lines, suffer an overbearing boss, take kids to soccer games, experience a menstrual cycle, suffer racial discrimination, and jerk their own rod?  I mean, millions of people do and we don't want the pres being out of touch  ::) ;)

That being said, I do hope he at least understands the issues around it and the implications of messing with it.  From an 'advised' standpoint or not.
