#1, while the official comprehensive NFL rulebook is not publically available,   there is no  explicit 100% faceguard rule,  and for good reason (see #2).

#2, the announcers say  last night that the 'faceguard' rule must *always*  be applied when the DB has his back to the ball and was correctly done in this case


so let's have a hypotehtical.  I am the CB,  you are the WR, and you have 10 yards on me because  you made a great double move.  I'm runnign to try and catch up with you.   the QB can simply throw it into the back of me, my feet, hell, just even behind me, etc

according to simms and nantz this is 100% always faceguarding and a dpi penalty.  what morons.   nobody would ever have any incentive to complete a deep ball,  as drawing the dpi  would always be easier.

i guess that's  why whenever the QB is blitzed, and throws it away OOB on the sideline 30 yards short of the receiver  while the DBs have their backs to the ball,   the officials call it dpi  ::)


now, let's not make a mistake, i think IF there is contact and the DB isn't looking back to the ball, that's a penatly, and so does the NFL rulebook.  last night, the ball was badly underthrown, the receiver couldn't have caught ,it, and there was no db-wr contact anyways.

How many drinks did you have last night? That ball could have been caught if it didn't hit the db's elbow.  It wouldn't have been an easy catch (Just ask Caldwell about that, 2 dropped gimme passes that my 10 year old could have made).  But it could have been caught. 

BTW, what was up w/ Caldwell's eyes? 

if it would have been so easily caught, why didnt the receiver come back to it  :P, run into the DB (actual contact) and then CORRECTLY get the   faceguarding call (since contact would have existed)

2. Don't know, haven't read the rule book.  So do you think it would be fair for a db to throw his hands up in a receiver's face w/ out trying to make a play on the ball contact or not?

2. we can only read whats on NFL, not the book the actual officials get.
*yes. otherwise DL could never try to tip passes at the LOS because they would be impairing the receiver from seeing it's release.  :)

3. it would be silly to have a no contact DPI rule.  you'd never even be able to intercept the ball if that were the case.  "the defender impeded me from making the catch by intercepting it"

3. Agreed.  However, unlike college DBers, the guys in the NFL should have to turn around and make an attempt to bat or intercept the ball and not just throw their hands up trying to play catch up b/c they got toasted by the wide receiver.
