$5 says it's the labels making them do this.  Was EMI involved with this and was it pre- or post-Terra Firma?  I wonder.

It seems a unique iTunes identifier would suffice and would avoid the publishing of private data.  However, that turns Apple into a police force so I can see why they don't want that.

Apple can use this data to detect download pirates?  I have no problem with that.

Given the choice of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs looking over my shoulder, I would probably choose Steve.

Not sure they ever were really 'buddies', but I know there has always been some cross-pollenization between the two companies.
