I really wish no damage to NOLA or harm to anyone but.....

a direct hit right smack in the middle of the Republican convention? Let's see what Karl Rove has to say about this:

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/08/28/gustav-threatens-gop-convention-plans/

Quote
“The Republicans can’t seem to get a break when it comes to August and when it comes to the weather,” said Rove, a FOX News analyst.

Yes, the Republicans can't seem to catch a break with August weather. I'm guessing the people of Louisiana are sympathetic with your plight. Stupid Mother Nature.

But what he says is true.  Katrina hit right in the middle of Bush's vacation.  Talk about your bad luck!!

Wow, cat3-4 strike on NOLA once again, almost certain at this point.  Not to make light of the tragedy this will be , but this is about the worst possible thing that could happen to the repugs right now!

And look at the storm brewing over Sarah Palin (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/sarah-palin). What has McLame has gotten that poor woman into? The media is going to be merciless. Why does McCain hate 'Merkan hockey moms?

Question Aske.

What would you have McCain do?

They are in a no win situation. I guarantee any course of action would be ridiculed by you and the left. I'm not defending McCain and the Republicans but I just don't see how they can be faulted for their actions now.

If he gives a speech from NOLA, I'd like to hear it before I pass judgment on whether or not the situation has been exploited.

By all accounts the evacuation of NOLA has gone well. Any chance FEMA and the feds get some praise for learning their lesson? Doubt it. Look, everybody from the local level to the federal level *fudge*ed up big time the last go around. It appears things have changed for the better this time in regard to taking a big-ass hurricane seriously.

I'd have him delay the convention. Seriously.  Sometimes things are MORE important than lost $/time. THAT would be his chance to   live down the haunting legacy of his hypocritical  'sympathetic' response to Katrina (surely he was eyeing a 2008 run at the time)
(http://bagnewsnotes.typepad.com/bagnews/images/bush-mccain-katrina-3.jpg).   I'll be damned if he sure looks critical there at the time.

You know, it might also give him bag 1oz of credibility to the 'maverick' label he likes to call himself, instead of taking the surefire business as usual approach (and likely exploit the tragedy angle).

The problem as I see it, is ... even if he manages not to 'verbally' exploit it, he's just getting in the way of the relief efforts.  He's not the president yet, he's not a LA senator, etc. He really has no business being there and other than possibly* offering sympathy, what is he going to do there, bail water?  I'd have a lot less problem with this if he were doing it even 2-3 weeks after 'impact' not 2-3 days.

This I have to agree with.  Word is that either a better (yes Repbulican!!)  administation, experience, some other factors, or all of the above have contributed to a MUCH better gameplan for getting people to safety. -- The REAL issue of concern

I'm not looking for a fight. Particularly about McCain and the past. But NOLA is a ghost town. What the hell should the Republicans do? The convention is toast. He's already canceling most of the opening day.:

Quote
ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain tore up the script for his Republican National Convention on Sunday, ordering the cancellation of all but essential opening-day activities as Hurricane Gustav churned toward New Orleans.

I'm sure they'll play it day by day from there.

Maybe I'm in a bad mood today but sometimes I get exasperated with the crap. No matter what McCain does this week he'll be slayed by the left.

I'm contemplating a GolfKos sabbatical until Thanksgiving or so.  The Wankathon should be over by then and our resident Über Lefties well spent.  We can then get back to discussing the truly meaningless topics we used to love so much around here.

After going outside and kicking the soccer ball around with my daughter I think my problem is this:

I believe the Democrats would have "used" Gustav during the coronation of the Messiah had their convention been this week. And that is the hyprocrisy I hate with stuff like this. The simple fact of using this hurricane as a political tool to slam the right is just as bad as how you may feel the Republicans will perhaps exploit it.

And with that and a deep breath I'm going to take Uisce's advice.*

*edit: from the political crap until the elections are over. Or maybe even beyond that.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Nice piece of blather from the VPILF nominee:

Quote
"There are consequences when government fails to make good on its most basic obligations, and this is true not just in times of crisis."

"Every day the decisions of government can make lives better for our people or worse, add to their burdens or lighten them and strengthen the security of our nation or diminish that security," she said.

Cynically, I'd point out that  the Reps can blame the fact that their convention was about to be a bust (20 pct of sitting US Senators weren't attending anyway as one example) on a weather event that's happening 1,000 miles a way.

Fuzzy, if pointing that out is pissing you off, I really am sorry.

I'd join you but I get bored to quickly. Maybe we just need to start some more threads. You tube and funny picture threads on the way.

I probably posted when I shouldn't have today. Oh well.

Gustav not expected to reach Cat 4 (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080831/ts_nm/storm_gustav_strength_dc_1).
