Title: History Buffs
Post by: Uisce Beatha on August 31, 2007, 08:23:01 AM
Today's Amazon alert (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=pe_6717610_txt_1/?ie=UTF8&docId=1000122611).

Book and DVDs.  I'll have to look up the broadcast dates for the series.  Supposedly in September.  Depending on how good it is the book will probably turn out to be a must.

This has great potential.  Burns is fantastic and WWII is one of my favorite history reads.  Plus, the father-in-law's Christmas present is pretty much nailed four months early.

That sounds great!  Too bad I don't allow myself any purchases beyond the State Fair....

How much does buying the State Fair set you back?

Not very much usually.  I try to keep spending under $30, and there are usually some really good deals (like a certain leather shop in Heritage Square, etc).  But I try to save up so I don't have to even bother to think about prices around Christmas, so the my last purchase for myself is at the State Fair.

You might like Lost Triumph: Lee's Real Plan at Gettysburg and Why it Failed by Tom Carhart.  It's the Civil War and not WWII, but I thought it was very interesting.  Probably the next book I'll add to my small "library".

Thanks for the recommendation.  I'm in the middle of a fiction kick right now.  They last about a year.  Then I'll go a year on history.  Been that way for about 1.5 decades now.

Yeah, there are times that I miss some really good deals. *sigh*

However, I tend to think it's worth it. :)

You're welcome.  I thought his proposition was very probable.  Some history buffs love it, some say it's far-fetched and horrible.  However, I think it has some (more than some) merit, much more so than the common "he was just having a bad day" that some try to pass the battle off with.

They have nice stuff.  Actually, Heritage Square has several really nice shops.  The International Bazaar is another good place to look for stuff, but sometimes prices there get a bit spendy.  And I wouldn't look for jewelry there (though there is an occasional gem), head off to the Grandstand for that (prices are steeper, but the quality is much better).

Or something could have gone over my head just now...

Not to jack the thread, but what was the premise?

That Lee wasn't just planning Pickett's Charge but also an attack very similar to one of Bonaparte's where there's also a calvary attack from the rear, catching the Union line in between.

Didn't he?

Stuart faced off with the Union cavalry on the 3d day 4 or 5 miles away from the battlefield, IIRC.

This of course after being a day and a half late... ::)

Many historians seem to think that Stuart was just supposed to be a minor skirmish and not part of the grand scheme of things.  (At least, that's the conclusion I come to when some of them are talking about how un-historic the book is.)  And actually, Stuart didn't make it as far as the proposition had him coming.  He got caught up with Custer and his calvary instead of hitting into the army.

You can figure it out.  No pop culture on this one.   ;)

No worries on the other.  I'm the king of threadjacks.  I often change the subject when conversing in real life too.   :o [sm_devil]

So how much do state fairs run in Minnesnowta?

Ooooooh, I see the phrase now.  lol

Yeah, I always purchase the whole state fair.  There really isn't any other way to go.  Surprisingly, it doesn't set me back as much as you would think.  I just can't figure out why I have to buy the thing every year.... [sm_dunno]  ;)

I don't have a problem with threadjacks, but I know some people do mind so I try to stay on topic.  Well, most of the time.

I guess I'll have to read the book, but I'm not seeing how whether or not Stuart was stopped by the Union Cavalry (of which Custer was a fairly lowly brigade commander) has any impact on how Lee lost the battle, which was the fairly incredible decision to launch a frontal assault against an entrenched enemy across almost a mile of open ground.

This was a decision so ill advised that Longstreet almost resigned rather than have to give the order.

Why Lee made it has long been a mystery, but not really:

He screwed up.

Well, there was a lot of ground work, and I'm not doing the greatest job on the summary.  But, regardless of the conclusion you come to, I think you would enjoy the book, if you read it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your summary, dear.

Might be something wrong with the guys premise, however....

Sorry, didn't mean to jack the thread. It was an interesting subject.

Won't happen again.

Okay, I lied: It's  an interesting subject (why Lee couldn't repeat his success at Chancelorsville a few weeks later at Gettysburg) but I'm really NOT sorry, and it will happen again.

Thus the reason the battle is so interesting. Lee could have won. Mistakes happen even on the battle field and timing is everything.

This is one of the battles that are taught at military schools and for just cause.
