LOL

The term "Hoon" was first used in Australia at the turn of the 20th century where it referred to a man living off immoral earnings [1] (i.e. a pimp). The origin of its current usage is currently unknown but is widely believed to be a shortened form of "hooligan" [2]. In more recent times it has been used to describe any young male or female who drives in a manner which is anti-social towards the standards of modern day society. Generally, a hoon is any person who drives any vehicle dangerously and/or fast.

In that you can inlcude, doing burnouts, doughnuts (also known as circle work), street racing and so forth... ;)

The current usage is a little more broad, and usually wouldn't include all but the more egregious forms of 'Speeding'.

A hoon is somebody who practices 'Hoonage', which would be loosely defined as high risk behavior involving a motor vehicle not specifically designed for said high risk behavior.

Examples would be: Launching your moms minivan off of a driveway or railroad crossing for altitude and/or distance, disabling the traction control in all manner of AWD vehicles to attempt 4 wheel burnouts, donuts, most types of street racing, and certain types of closed course racing not specifically designated as 'Destruction Derbies'.

In other words, a good Friday night.

Did I say Motorvehicle?

Clearly, no motors necessary for these top-notch hoons:

Clearly, there's a difference between types of hoonage that involve danger to unsuspecting bystanders, and the kind of hoonage that involves injury only to ones own body, property or ego.

The former should, of course, be heartily discouraged by any means necessary. The latter I would refer to as 'Good, clean fun'.  ;D

I'd also draw a distinction between actual vehicular mayhem and ancillary activities, like public intoxication, assault and battery, and general juvenile obnoxiousness.

I still enjoy the occasional donut, and slamming it in 4x4 and ripping through a couple of spots I know on the way home from work is a nice way to blow off a little steam.

Are roving bands of violent donut burners a big problem in Australia? We have a huge street racing problem here in the industrial parks of South King County, a direct descendant of the street cruising scene of the 70's and 80's.
