Post by: gleek on December 05, 2007, 10:51:23 PM
Absinthe is legal again (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2007/12/05/MNQJTO9FM.DTL).

I'll try some.  Does it mix with Coke Zero?  Or is it more of a sour mix drink?

Is this one of those "slippery slope" kind of deals?

Gotta take the first step to find out.

According to my local news (and wikipedia), you mix it with ice water, and maybe sugar, before drinking:

(Wow I'm a nerd.  No personal experience, I just read about how someone else might do things.)

I had a glass once. Can't remember if they added sugar but I didn't.

I didn't think it was anything special. Perhaps I shouldn't have had just one.  [sm_devil]

We used to order online from France (http://www.absintheonline.com) all the time...my wife loves it, I could take it or leave it.  We used to pour ice water over a sugar cube in a absinthe spoon, and drink it like a shot.  I will say, that it is a very different feeling buzz than regular alcohol, though its hallucinogenic effects are bogus.

But are the other purported effects bogus?

A friend handed me a glass of absinthe at a party. I had never heard of absinthe and figured it was just some brand of alcohol. I drank about half a measuring cup. It tasted sort of like Sambuca, but stronger.

First I got a really weird kind of drunk. I had an intense craving for ****. I also had a very strange experience where I seemed to just lose all sense of morality. I actually made a plan to do some awful things to people for my own gain, which seemed surreal the next day when I was sober again. Towards the end of the night, I got hallucinations, which felt rather like dreaming except that I was awake. It was very similar to the one time I experienced sleep apnea, except that instead of having just woken up and lying in my bed, I was still walking around at the party. I saw my cat who had died come and scold me for letting him die. It was rather nightmarish.

I've talked to some other people who have tried absinthe and they have reported the exact same things: cravings for ****, loss of morality, hallucinations. Then I was very surprised when I looked up absinthe and saw plenty of reports of the exact same thing, except every source describes these reports as just myths.

So I'm very confused! Is there something going around under the name of absinthe that is actually something completely different? How did we get all these effects if they're just myths? It can't be psychosomatic because I had never even heard of absinthe and had no idea it was anything special.

Unless his real name is absinthe, this is the only thing to have the purported effects on my wife.  :(

You never learn, do you?   :-[

I'm just dreaming about equality and an end of demeaning potheads.  Maybe it is a pipe dream but it is my dream.  First the man keeps us down and then pop culture kicks us with constant jokes.  All potheads are not hippies and we don't all smell bad.  If we get cut do we not bleed?

You don't hear anyone say hey the packers with Vicodin popping Favre are playing the Cowboys Thurs.  I bet he doesn't feel any of the hits.  Or lets watch alcoholic Keifer kill terrorists tonight on 24 chug chug wink wink.

Potheads are just like everyone else needing a little something something to take the edge off a day.  Some prefer xanax while others indulge in spirits but it is all for the same goal.

The next time you speak to your banker, ask a waiter about the wine specials, order fries with that or submit a business proposal to a venture capitalist; you may be dealing with a pothead and not know it.  So give us a chance everyone.  That is all we ask.  We are no different than you.

While in Paris I went to an absinthe bar and drank quite a bit of it.  Hard to say if it was any different feeling that regular alcohol.  I do remember walking around the lawn by the eiffel tower and asking everyone for pot.  Most of the kids looked at me like I was some drunk ass moran american, rightfully so of course.  Finally the girl we met at our hostel from Gibralter scored some pretty good weed.  Any hallucinating I experienced I will attribute it to being drunk off my ass and stoned to the bejesus belt.  I'm guessing you'd have to mix it with opium, LSD or shrooms to trip.  I can see how the description below could happen but it wouldn't be too unusual for me if you know what i"m sayin.
