Title: RJ11 stupid question
Post by: Uisce Beatha on November 05, 2007, 07:10:56 AM
I have to do some telephone line mods today.  It's been ages.  I need to go buy a couple of female extension jacks and hook 'em up.  I don't want in-the-wall units.  I have loose wires coming into my AV stuff and I just want free-hanging jacks.

So, stupid question time.  Am I safe running down to Lowes or Radio Shack for these?  Also, do I need any special tools?  I used to have a 'crimper' back in the day for RJ11 and RJ45 but I have no idea where it is.  It wouldn't help me for female connections anyway.

I still have my crimper..... somewhere.

I know the in-the-wall units have the 'blade' type termination (no crimper needed), just not sure about free-hanging ones.

If I stumped Hicks on telecom I know I'm in trouble.   ;)

If you're asking what I think you're asking, you should be just fine.  No crimper needed.  You may have to buy an actual jack, even if you don't plan to sink it in the wall.  you can get a small round modular one for about $1.50.  Then you just strip, and screw down the wires.  red, green, yellow, and black IIRC.

Is this for the DirecTV receiver?

I've always used the in-wall ones - no 'shoddy' work from me with dangling mods  [sm_enguard]

 :D

Yep.  x2.

Wires are there.  Blue and blue/white are single line telephone and that's what I had plugged into the old Dish equipment.  However, the lines are way too long for the new stand and they're male connectors coming straight from the wall to the units.  I need to shorten the lines and figure I might as well go with female connectors closer to the wall for flexibility.

Honestly though, that's really not your call to make.   [sm_hump]

In case you need to know:

Radio Shack -  [sm_thumbsdown]

Lowes -  [sm_thumbsup2]

Oh, one more thing.

Guy who decided we needed two RJ45 wiring standards (http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable5.htm) -  [sm_cussing] [sm_cussing] [sm_cussing] [sm_cussing] [sm_cussing] [sm_cussing] [sm_cussing]

LOL - thats easy these days - hardly any need for crossover cables anymore.  Any recent switch will have auto MDI/MDI-X capabilities.  Unless you're wiring two computers directly to one another, its safe to forget about crossover wiring.

It's not the cross-over bit.  I get that.  It's the different pin-outs for 568A v. 568B.  Why?   ???

Since this is a phone jack it didn't really matter as blue and blue/white are the same in both but, damn, it sure made me think much more than I wanted.   :-\

Oh, well the true pin out is the same, its just colors - do it however you want.  Toss in some fuchsia if ya want, or some periwinkle.

LOL.  The problem is not knowing how it's configured on the other end.  They can be either pattern but they do have to match.

You're the second person in my life to use the word periwinkle.  I've been arguing with a friend for 8.5 years that it's not a real word since nobody else uses it.  So now you've gone and ruined that for me.   ;)

Did you understand a word that he just said?

Brad Pitt should have won an Oscar.  No contest.  He was brilliant.
