Title: Hot sauces

Just wondering if anyone has a favorite. We like to tex-mex a lot and have tried several different brands. The one we like now is a Mango hot sauce from Texas-Texas. Their regular hot sauce is pretty good too.

There's a local joint around here that used to sell their hot sauce by the quart/pint/something.  I need to see if they still do 'cuz it's muy bueno.

If you're ever looking for a meal in downtown SLC ask for directions to the Red Iquana.  It's a two minute drive from all the hotels.  It's a dive but it takes the top of the Best Mex ranking every single year.

Shall I assume you're talking about Rico? They sell their wares at the downtown farmers market and they have a storefront near the downtown area. You can get their stuff in some, but not many, local grocery stores. Muy bueno indeed.

Are we talking about hot sauces in general or the more ethnicky kind?

For non-ethnicky type sauces, I still like Tabasco for the right amount of heat. I like the flavor of Frank's RedHot, but I can practically drink that stuff like it's lemonade. Not enough heat.

If I want something Asian-influenced, I like Sriracha.

If I want Mexican, I usually get some freshly-made pico de gallo from a Mexican grocery store a few miles from my house.

I never cared for Tobasco.  Not the heat, but some flavor in it.

I like the Sriracha.  That's plenty hot enough for me.

Ethnicky I really like a good hot Chinese mustard.  Put it on everything. (I think of a brand off hand)

[boring ass story]  When I was stationed out east, my buddy would take me to this wing joint in his home town in PA.  The had the usual array of sauces with all the clever names.  You could order the sauces to take home, and do your own wings.  The funny thing is, the top 2 ones, they couldn't send out in styrofoam containers, because it would burn through.[/boring ass story]

As hot sauce goes: I'm a big fan of the old standard Tabasco. The wife doesn't like it because it's too vinegary (which is precisely what I like about it) so we also keep on hand a bottle of Cholula. Franks is fine too, but ideally just as a flavoring, not really to add any amount of spice. Makes pretty good Buffalo wings. I dabbled a bit in making my own hot sauce, but never really got the hang of it and always found that the stuff from the store was just as good if not better.

Salsa: nothing beats home made with garden fresh tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, etc. We also like to dabble in fruit salsas like mango, peach, etc. If I can't do homemade, I'll try to pick up some of the previously mentioned Rico's from the farmers market. A couple of varieties sold at Costco are also passable, but their mango salsa needs more heat, so we'll usually mix in some habanero paste.

I don't have a favorite, but I do really like Tabasco and Sriracha.

I've tried some great hot sauces at restaurants, but never remember to write down what kind they are. :-[

I guess I'll clarify, I was referring more to salsas. Down here when we say hot sauce it means salsa.

On the lines of what you guys have been saying Tabasco is my favorite but I am not partial to it by any means. I have tried others and while they are all good Tabasco does remind me of buffalo wings.

I make my own, but I never keep track from year-to-year how I make it or even what peppers I use.

Actually, I was talking about the Iquana's hot sauce.   [sm_thumbsup2] [sm_thumbsup2]

I think I've had Rico's before from a deli section at Albertsons or Smiths but I didn't know it was local.  My new place of employment is about eight blocks from their shop.  If I ever decide to show up at the office maybe I'll stop in and grab some.

I like Crystal hot sauce from Louisiana - it's slightly milder than the McIlhenny Tabasco brand, has a great taste, and is cheaper to boot.  I also like the new Tabasco Chipotle sauce - it's a little milder than the standard Tabasco red sauce and has a smokey flavor.  Yum yum.

Mmmm...mango salsa.

There's a taqueria a couple blocks away that I sometimes go to for lunch that has a killer salsa bar.  Their mango salsa rocks.

hehe, no I stole it from their website.  But the next time I'm there, I'll take a picture of their salsa bar.
