Title: If you had to enter an eating contest...
Post by: dystopia on August 07, 2007, 03:40:00 PM
The twoiron thread about the dude that ate 40 bananas got me thinking.

I know that guy was forced to eat them, but I bet I could only eat 4-5 bananas voluntarily.  I'm thinking that if I had an eating contest with an average person picked off the street featuring bananas, I would lose.

But with other foods I like my chances.  I used to have eating contests with my friends in high school and college with pizza, or 10 cent wings, or fries from The "O".  I don't remember the numbers, but they weren't as high as I would have expected.  I know I'd be terrible at hotdogs, though, especially because of the buns.

If you could pick the food for an eating contest against a group of average people (non-professional eaters), what food do you think you could put away better than most?

Desserts (brownies, choc chip cookies, ice cream, pies)?
Paella? Cheezits? Chowda? Spider rolls?
Less common foods (Beef Wellington, Thousand-year-old-eggs)?

Shepherds Pies
Maynards Wine Gums
Lemon Meringue Pies
Crepes
Hush Puppies

Gad, no wonder I'm fat.   :-\

Shepherds Pie  [sm_thumbsup2]

I haven't had Hush Puppies since I was a kid and that was at Long John Silver's, so that probably doesn't even count.

In the past I might have put bacon on my list since it's rare that I ever have my fill of bacon. (bacon at buffets are usually kind of soggy)  But there have been a few times recently at the end of ski trips where we've bought huge amounts of bacon and have to either eat it all or throw it away.  I now no longer wonder what it's like to be able to eat so much bacon that I will turn it down.  :-[

Pretty sure it wouldn't be hardboiled eggs.

Speaking of Pittsburgh, my suitemate freshman year was a big-time NJ Devils fan, and I was a pseudo Mario Lemieux fan. Since he was from NJ and had access to a car, we decided to go see a Pens-Devils game at Brendan Byrne Arena. On the way there, we stopped at a White Castle to get some food to go. Being college kids looking for value, we were intrigued by this special that they were running. If you ordered 2 double White Castles, you got a free drink. We each ordered 5 specials (i.e. 20 double White Castles + 10 drinks for 2 people). The funniest thing was hearing the guy in the back packing up the order indignantly ask "Hey, man, who are these greedy people?!" Those were some good times.

The only details of the game that I remember were that we were running late so we had to listen to the first half of the first period on the radio. Lemieux scored 3 goals while we were still in the car. When we finally got into the arena, we watched 50 more minutes of nothing while partaking in our feast. The game ended 3-0.

Wings, definitely wings, I grew up in Buffalo and ate them twice a week. I'll go to Hooters with friends and they would say I can eat maybe 10 and we would order 50. Hooters wings don't count as true Buffalo wings though.

Ooo one for the overrated thread.

Not all at the same time, though.

I wouldn't call them food but....

Little Debbie swiss cake rolls (like the Hostess Ho-Ho's)
Popsicles and Freezees or whatever they are called. Basically frozen flavored syrup.

I'm addicted and can't have them in the house. My wife buys me a box of Little Debbies each Christmas and I buy some popsicles once every summer. I would seriously kick anyone's ass if either were involved.

What is it about those?

The filling and cake have a texture that would embarass even the most amateurish baker or even a small child with an EZ Bake oven, but they sure are good.

I like the peanut butter and chocolate wafer thingies.

I made the lady that fills our snack machine put those in, pretty much at gun point.

Ribs.  I've been banned from a local place that offers all you can eat ribs, during the all you can eat special only.

Cold boiled shrimp.  Shuckin' Shack.   Had an all you can eat night on Wednesdays.  After I attended 6 consecutive Wednesdays, they stopped.

Wings. Fricker's.  Has $.20 wing tuesday.  Once again, banned, tuesdays only.

Beer.  Need I say more?

SWMBO will not buy fig newtons as they don't last the hour.

I'm a tall bald fat white man.  And proud of it!

edit to add:  I can really do damage to bangers and mash too! ;D

Here (http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/45/OldFashionedScrapple61686.shtml) is a recipe that doesn't call for scraps.  I haven't had scrapple before.  Doubt that I'd like it, though, as I don't find recipes that include cornmeal delightful.
