Title: Brand Name Game.
Post by: stroh on April 07, 2008, 12:00:34 PM
Ok, it's not a game, but the Where Am I thread, and Blader's Burt Reynolds Odyssey got me thinking.  This is just like both of those (but not reallyTM )

The other day, one of the girls at work was talking about ipods, and I chimed in with my expertise.  **OK, Calm Down.  Calm Down.**

So of course the next obvious question came up:  "So, what's the difference between an ipod and an MP3 player?"

I explained it to her, and in doing so, I picked up a box off the counter, handed it to here and said "What is that?"  She responded as I had expected with: "It's a box of Kleenex."  I said.  Ah.  It's actually a box of facial tissues made by so an so corporation.

See where I'm goin' with this?

How many can we come up with?  There are the biggies, but also some good hidden ones as well.

Plus I saw one the other day, that I never knew was a brand name.  I just always knew it as "blankety blank"

I'll start with an easy/obvious one.

I don't have time to detail it, but I'll tell you that you hold a slim lead over Clive.

My understanding was that the word was supposed to be a BRAND, but at the same time the word people have come to associate with the ITEM in general.

(Then again, maybe that's why Uisce is ahead of me.)

Aspirin and Escalator, for example, used to be trademarks.  They became generic for the respective goods, after which the trademarks were canceled.  Xerox is afraid of this phenomenon to the point of taking out ads, "reminding" people that it's photocopying and not Xeroxing.

That's what I had in mind.

Maybe I was off on some of mine, like Linoleum.

Whose action you hatin' on?  With maybe one or two questionable submissions (one being my Roofie reference, I was struggling for Lycra but it just wouldn't happen in the moment) in four pages I think the 'hos are kicking ass.
