Title: Joe Jackson vs. Supertramp
Post by: Uisce Beatha on August 24, 2007, 08:43:49 PM
Dee Snyder famously (well, not so much) said "There were bands that died a death with the birth of MTV, like Supertramp and Joe Jackson."

Unfortunate alliteration aside, what say you?

Not even close for me.  Supertramp all the way.  Brothers in Arms is top ten all time... easy.

BTW, I don't know a single Joe Jackson song.  LOL.

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really going to take him home tonight?

I know Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" but I do not remember Supertramp's. I'm going to have to look it up.

Supertramp's most successful album predated MTV. He must have meant Dire Straits.

Here's a rare Supertramp video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBAasek8NR4). I don't think this was ever played on MTV.

I thought that was Rick Springfield or the Greg Kihn Band or somebody equally lame... seriously.  No matter, only reinforces my vote.   ;)

Best line from this song:
Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.

Cool trivia:
At the end of the song when the singer says "digital", the sound clip representing a turnover on downs from Mattel's Electronic Football is played.

*fudge*, you mean I've gotta go back and listen to that lameass song again?

After reviewing the video evidence presented (and a couple I found on my own) I voted Supertramp.

Plus they remind me of the time I knew a young lady who really loved them.  8)

I didn't see the comma initially, and I had to do a double take. LOL

BTW, *fudge* you! I like that song.  ;D

Supertramp not even close.

Jimmy Cream was keen
His brain was always winnin'
I can't keep track of mine
It's really quite a joke.

I question the manhood of any man who says he's a man and voted for Joe Jackson.

Because Supertramp wrote such masculine songs.  ::)

A heck of a lot more masculine than any freakin' Joe Jackson song, are you kidding me? ::)

Quote
Take a look at my girlfriend, blahh, blahh, blahh, she's the only one I got.

Not much of a girfriend, blah, blah, blah

These are the lyrics of a shut in who plays second life for hours with a virtual wife who's actually a 350lb plumber in Fresno.

Quote
You -
Can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We'll be there in just a while
If you follow me

Me babe - steppin out
Into the night
Into the light
You babe - steppin out
Into the night
Into the light

These are the lyrics of a healthy, mature man with, ahem,  appetites.

LOL!  Spacey got me with any Anthrax reference, and Fuzzy with the one I was thinking of.... "Is she really going out with him".

But lets be honest - the person that was killed by video is hands down......... Billy Squire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orW2NXQZg8U).

Billy Squier rules.

But you're right, that video killed him.  Killed him dead.  He was 1974 Peter Frampton before that video.  He was 2001 Michael Jackson after.  He admits it.

Lives in Park City by the way.  Or at least spends a lot of time there.  We know these things around here.  We have a serious inferiority complex and celebrity-from-bygone-era sightings are regularly reported on AM radio.

Somebody once told me that Squier is "light in the loafers". I'm guessing the rumors started with this video.
