I've still got it... although I play so much golf now that I've not done much bow hunting lately.  It's a 1992 MACH-5X (machined aluminum riser) and Mongoose competition sight and MACH-FLITE overdraw.

Time goes by quickly.  I purchased it in 1992.  It was about the 4th or 5th bow I had up to that time but it will be my last as I still just love this equipment.  Every once in a while I'll get it out and shoot at an archery range in a local park close to my house.  I also used to shoot in some 3D tourneys with it but it really isn't designed for that purpose.  It's great for hunting though!

The deer scored 173 typical and was taken in Southwest Iowa in the loess hills.

Fear not, there are plenty of deer left.  In Iowa in the 1880's it was rare to see a deer.  The population dropped so much that deer hunting was declared illegal in 1898.  The population slowly returned and it was estimated there were 500-700 animals in Iowa in 1936.

Hunting was opened up again in 1953.  With all of the corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, and hay crops... the deer do very well indeed.  It is estimated that without hunting (the only major source of deer mortality in Iowa) the population densities in some areas would reach 100 or more animals per square mile!

Rest assured that there are plenty of Bambi Dad's remaining.  :D

Well, yes and no.  Yes, in that, Bambi was a male deer.  No, in that, Bambi was just a baby.  A buck is an adult male deer.  So, technically, Bambi was a fawn.

And it's really kewl that you don't have a problem with bow hunting. [sm_thumbsup2]

Could be my faulty memory, since I haven't seen it since my mom took me to the drive-in when I was 5 or so, but I swear at the end of the movie, they show a grown Bambi (Buck) with his children. Am I just being nit-picky?

[$.02] For the record, I really don't have a huge problem with hunting of most varieties as long as it's done in an environmentally friendly manner, and the animal is actually more than just a trophy (i.e.- the meat gets consumed). Personally, I don't care for the taste of venison, but I don't hunt either. What I object to is killin' for the sake of killin' and to the hunting of big game just for the rush of taking it down. At the risk of sounding like an anti-gun type (which I'm really not)- I also don't believe that assault rifles with armor piercing bullets count as hunting necessities, but that's a different argument for a different time and place. [/$.02]

That's why I hunt -- love the meat!  Don't buy any in the supermarket when the freezer is full of venison.

For the record, I shoot recurve also but don't consider myself good enough with it to hunt.  Got to make a clean kill and not sure I can with the recurve and won't hunt with it until I'm sure I can.

Very nice Eagleone.  That's a buck to be proud of for sure.... it looks like it would qualify for the Pope and Young Record Book.

Everyone around here hunts for the meat too.  If you don't, you can donate your deer to the local locker and they will process the meat and give it to charity, soup kitchens, low-income families, etc...  It is a State sponsored program.  NOTHING goes to waste around here.  There are no direct processing costs to the hunter.  I think the program is funded with a portion of the hunting license fee... but I'm not sure about that.

The number of people hurt and killed in Iowa by vehicular accidents involving deer has really escalated in the last decade or so.  Hunting is a must or nobody would be able to drive anywhere without hitting one.  Thousands of deer end up as roadkill in Iowa every year.  The "peak" year for roadkill was around 2003 and then the State DNR started letting folks purchase more licenses.  I hit one in the mid-1980's on the Interstate Highway at 70 mph.  It wasn't pretty.

It also wasn't some gory picture of the deer with blood all over with arrows sticking out of it, neither was it a picture of it being gutted out. Both were very "tastefully" taken photos showing them, their bow, and the deer they shot. Nothing more. And I would hope that you would agree that there is a vast difference between such pictures as well.

Does it have to be gory to be found offensive?
*edit* Websters Dictionary definiton #4 unpleasant or disagreeable* So a picture can be gory without blood all over it or arrows sticking out of it.

Taste is a very subjective word, maybe some people would find that image tasteless.

Difference of opinion, you seem to be taking this very personally. I don't hunt, never have never will, but I'm not stopping you, I just don't want to see a dead animal displayed without warning, I only asked (nicely I thought) a very simple question.

Haven't watched Bambi since I stopped watching Disney and its affiliates (approximately 10 years ago), and don't remember all that much of it.  From what I remember, they do show a buck with a fawn at the end but only a silhouette.  I always thought it was Bambi being reunited with his dad because in the movie they never did say that his dad was dead.  I wouldn't say you're being nit-picky, I would just say the ending is vague and leaves it up to us to figure out what it's supposed be. Maybe you're right, in that, it's a grown Bambi.  [sm_dontknow] :)

And, spacey, I totally agree that someone should be hunting because it supplies him/her with meat and not just for the trophy.  That's exactly why we do hunt - for the food.  To us, a nice rack is just a bonus.  If a doe comes by, and we have a doe permit, we aren't the type to pass it up just because we want a buck.  However, we won't shoot a fawn.  2 reasons being less meat and it helps allow the herd to stay at a good reproduction rate.  I also agree that assault rifles aren't hunting necessities.  That much power isn't at all needed.  That is a different argument.  Not that one is needed though since we both agree. :)

As usual spaceage said his two cents better than I could have, but it sums up about how I feel.

Mr. McDuff, I do agree that, compared to another forum that most of us are at least familiar with, most things that are posted here are tamer - especially since the more recent consensus that we want to keep this site nice, to keep it from being listed as an adult site, and etc.  It's also nice that you guys are conscious of using the warn tags and NSFW when you do.  For that, I deeply thank you all.  However, while tamer, it's not to say that there haven't been things posted that I wish hadn't been displayed on my monitor.  But it is very nice that it doesn't happen too often.

Yes, there is a vast difference between saying "I shot a deer" and showing a picture of it.  I think that's why Mr. ForeDucks directed the thread to Mr. Torpedo - because he knew that Mr. Torpedo would be the interested party.   But Mr. ForeDucks - and Mr. Eagleone, too - was also careful not to post a horrendous, graphic, obscene picture that could be more than easily offensive to others that might see it.  I have grown up around hunting and have seen most of the processing and etc.  Yet I have seen pictures that have been taken (by others, not us) - or rather shown - with, um, judgment lacking.  I won't go on to describe the photos because I don't think you'd care to hear what they looked like.  I agree with Mr. Spaceage that hunting should be for the food it helps provide and not for sport.  I do, however, enjoy seeing pics, of a hunt - especially of a hunt that is most memorable and special to someone.  Yet, for those that don't hunt, I can understand how a picture - any picture, including those that are clean pics - of a dead animal might be something they don't want to see.

The purpose of this post, Mr. McDuff, is just that I know Mr. Torpedo and I have a different way of saying what we mean, and I hoped mine might be clear and reasonable to you.

(And, just in case it wasn't clear in my post, I was just add the "Mr" to everyone screen names to keep the post light and not because I'm trying to be firm or some such thing.)

Again it's a debate about semantics I guess Miss Eagle, I found the picture to be quite offensive and quite horrendous being the animal lover that I am. However, I am not a raging card carrying member of PETA, I would fight for your right to hunt in whichever manner you choose, you want to hunt animals, fine by me. While true that the post was aimed at your brother if the thread would have said hunting pics I would not have opened it, but you quite well know we come into this forum and we usually open the most recent threads no matter who it's aimed at.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I only found it slightly offensive maybe 5 pushing 6, quite possibly about as offensive as you find some of the swear words that you remove from some of the posts that you reply too, you don't want to see them, I don't want to see that, in fact I learned a lesson when replying to posts quite awhile back and it was directly attributed to you, and I have tried to be less offensive when I type, and I also try to remember that I may be talking to people like you and Torp who are my children's age, but it's hard, I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and spent three years in the Navy and the past 20 working with just men, and I'm a natural smart as aleck but I'm working on it kid, I really am.

The purpose of this post, Mr. McDuff, is just that I know Mr. Torpedo and I have a different way of saying what we mean, and I hoped mine might be clear and reasonable to you.
If this is the last we speak of it then Ok, and it was quite reasonable and maybe it's a tiny lesson for all of us.

Peace...Yes?

But Mr. ForeDucks - and Mr. Eagleone, too - was also careful not to post a horrendous, graphic, obscene picture that could be more than easily offensive to others that might see it.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound like it still couldn't be offensive. :( I just meant that there are some pics that would really, really, really be offensive (ranking about a 10 on your scale - more probably, and more than likely, they max out the scale), and that they made sure not to post a picture like that.
I, too, love animals.  Lots!  I love watching the wildlife that surrounds me - even just the little squirrels running around, hopping from tree to tree.  Before we moved to our current residence, we lived in a mobile home park.  We actually had a small patch of woods for a backyard and lots of wildlife - even deer.  We had some feeders out that we'd put corn in for them.  It was a lot of fun, especially since we were still in the cities.  The deer would let us get within 5 feet of them.  They wouldn't run away from us and they would even walk towards us a little.  It was so cool!  I really miss that.  :'(
I also thank you so much for your efforts you put into your posts in regards of trying to keep them less offensive to those of us (Torp and me) who would find it so.  :) :)

Here's a pic of a ruffed grouse as a peace-offering. :)

Imagine:

Nat in the Cantina bringing calm and reason to the animals.

(And, apparently, she's taken to emulating a 'New York Times' writing style.)

Like always, your wit is dead on, but you miss the fundamental.

Ok, never mind.  I'm loose with my karma.

Unfortunately, right now;  the words "loose", and "chaps" don't even go together for me.

I started in this week on dialing it back.
