So a 9th grader actually reads a book and it's a bad thing now.   ::)

We had a sixth grade parent complain that we showed Pirates of the Caribbean at a middle school function.  She doesn't allow her 12-year old to watch PG or higher.  Made a huge deal out of it.  Actually came up to the school during the event and lit into the middle school principal.  I thought the principal was either going to quit or tell the parent to find another school.  She handled it better than I would have.

It's tough to know where to draw the line.  I do believe there is one.  I also believe there's a right way to state your objections.  Do it quietly and with dignity - especially if it's the first time you've had "issues" with a teacher.  The story implies this teacher is an effective educator with no "history".  If you don't like the book you should (a) have your child select another, (b) mention your concerns and (c) go relax over a cup of coffee.  Having a problem with teaching material is, in all but extreme cases, not reason enough to try and get a teacher suspended/canned.

Anyone read this book?  Is the murder/necrophilia graphic?

BTW, my son is only a seventh-grader but we went through his book list with him this year and helped him pick out his books.

I'm really tired of parents who aren't involved until something catches their attention 2.5 quarters into the year.  I don't advocate helicoptering but jeez... come on.

When my older brother was ~12-13, the only books he would read were Stephen King books. He'd hole up in his room and read one in its entirety over a weekend. While my parents weren't necessarily thrilled about the subject matter, they figured it was better than not reading at all.

My Jr. High honors English classes offered some relatively  :airquotes: risqué  :airquotes: books as suggested reading, but there were always alternatives. IIRC, when I chose to read The Catcher in the Rye in 8th grade I was required to have my parents sign a form indicating that it was okay with them. Perhaps I was spoiled by parents who were actually active and involved in my education, but I don't recall ever reading anything K-12 that they were unaware of.

I think parents have a legitimate right to object if a child is forced to read material that is deemed outside of their chosen standards. If, however, the child chooses something off of a larger list (which is how I'm reading this), it sounds to me like a matter to be dealt with at home through open and honest discussion, not one to be taken to the streets screaming for the teacher's head.

It's symptomatic of our society's tendency to ignore and then overcompensate to prove how passionate we are once something is brought to our attention.

Oh I remember the days as a young girl in high school.

Everybody in my class went to the library, especially to read page 38(guessing the page number now!!!! ;D) of the Godfather, as it had a graphic **** scene in it. 
I don't think many of us actually read the whole book!!! :-[ :-[

Speaking of The Godfather.  Some dude on the freeway yesterday had the Godfather puppet logo (http://www.moviewallpapers.net/images/wallpapers/1972/the-godfather/the-godfather-1-1024.jpg) on the back window of his big arse SUV.  It was huge, covered the whole window.  Not too sure what that was all about but I'm not going near a toll booth while that guy's around.

Hey you never know, that guy ahead of you might pay your toll!!!! 8)
