I tend to play a lot as a single and get paired up with a lot of people.  Most everyone is nice to play with, and it's not that hard to adapt to someone's style after a hole or two.

Two characters really stand out for me, though.

The worst person I've been paired up with was a very good golfer, probably low, single digits.  But he completely lost it on one hole after he chunked a shot and threw his club into a tree.  The club got stuck in the tree, and he started throwing other clubs up to try and get it down.  The rest of our group just stood there in shock, but he said to go on and keep playing without him.

The part that bothered me the most was that I got the feeling that if he was playing by himself, he wouldn't have thrown the club at all.  It was almost as if he was putting on a show to demonstrate how it was completely beneath him and out of character to chunk a shot.  Unfortunately, the guy caught up with us at the next tee.

The strangest person I've been paired up with was a dude wearing a pair of ProAim putting glasses all day.  He looked like a freaking cyborg and never took them off.  I was paired up with his threesome, and his group also included the foursome right behind us.  After we would tee off, this guy would move the tee markers way back to put his friends behind us at a disadvantage.  It was a very strange day.

Anyone else get paired up with any interesting characters on a course?

I guy I use to work with invited me out with him and his two buddies. These two guys drove me nuts all day. They talked like a bad SNL skit.

"I got a bogage."
"A Boger?"
"Yup, a bogage."

or

"Got a tweeter that time"
"A bird?"
"you got it"

"A Frosty?"
"Yea I'm chill'n."

I was ready to shoot myself after about 4 holes.

The coke fiend, cell phone guy was probably the worst.  Played a round with him in St. George and then got paired with him again in Layton - 300+ miles away!!!  Thankfully it was my home course and my boys in the clubhouse reworked things and saved me.

Clive was probably the strangest.  I mean, assless chaps on the golf course just aren't for everybody.

He makes it work though.

A few weeks ago, I played with three really nice ladies, but the two in the other buggy were so slow, and all they did was talk on their cell phone!!!
They are nice but I hate slow play, so I really don't want to play with them again.

Worst: the guys I got paired up with a few weeks ago. Pretty good golfers but waaaay to serious. You know the types who take 5 minutes to line up a putt, address the ball, then a bird chirps or something and they have to step away from the ball, pace for a second and then go through their whole routine again. Every missed birdie opportunity was a slammed putter and a vulgar tirade, ever made birdie putt was a fist pump and a "yeeahhh" that would put some of Aske's death metal cookie monster vox guys to shame. Oh, not to mention ultra condescending to me and my brother. We sent them on their way on the 13th tee box, which was about 12 holes too late.

Weirdest: My brother.

Kev and I usually head out to the course as a two-some, and we've never been paired up with anyone else.  There was one time - on about the hole 3 or so - that someone came up and asked if he could join us because his golf buddy left.  The round was enjoyable, nothing weird or strange.  Except he did light a cigarette once - for about 20 seconds.  Had I been expecting it, I would have asked him not to before hand, but I wasn't.  After that, I tried to be alert to catch it, should he be reaching for another one; he didn't. 

Let's see, who else have a played golf with?  Kev, Kyle (cuz), Mike (IT guy friend), and I think that's it.  So no one is really strange or weird.

I don't know if they were strange or if I was unkind.  Periodically, I like to play 9 after work and just unwind and just not worry about anything.  On one of these occasions, I met a man and his son (about 12) on the first tee and they (almost eagerly) asked if I would join them.  It became quickly apparent that they wanted me to join them so that I could give them both lessons while we played as this was only the second time that they've been on the golf course in their lives, and they never hit the range.  TFT has played golf with me, and can testify that it would be very scary for me to teach anyone anything about golf as they could turn out to be a super hacker like me.  Anyway, I did try to help them for a few holes, but then told them I needed to play ahead so that I could finish before dark.  But I did suggest getting lessons, getting Hogan's book, and working on their short game before getting back to the course.

I got invited to play in a member and three guests scramble at a local private club.  One of the other guests was the member's banker.  The guy thought he was the most important guy in the world.  Spent all day taking phone calls and making us wait on him.

The fact that I was the CFO at my company and a potential client never dawned on the idiot.

Had a guy in my group once who spent the entire round giving himself a testicular self-examination.

So what did TFT wind up shooting?  :P

On vacation in Vegas maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I was placed with 2 other singles. Dude #1, nice enough guy, my age, but he had this swing trigger quirk that 2 months later I noticed I had started to copy bad idea, took me months to break it. That was very strange, when I play with people who have quirks like that I don't watch them anymore.

Dude #2. Older dude. I think he thought he was better than he really was. Maybe he was just having a bad day, dunno. If memory serves (and it rarely does anymore), he was cussin' from the git go, MF this GD that, SOB'in...anyway you get the drift, and it was classic when he would do combo's "how did the MF'in ball break when the SOB'in green is so GD flat", dude #1 and myself actually started to look at each other and laugh, we were sure this guy was going to blow a valve.

So we get to the 11th hole, and it was a hot day, over 90 and still climbing, and the sprinklers came on (the poor grass was stressin'), me being from Seattle and not used to this kind of weather  ;) I'm standing in the misty spray enjoying life, when I hear Dude #2 just laying into these Mexican course workers, in fact I think he even called them Mexican course workers but as you can imagine he wasn't as nice as I just was, and I do mean layed into them, I was shocked at his language.

I think it was the very next hole, I seem to remember a large waste area that ran the entire length of the hole, he hit his tee shot into it, so he's stompin' into the gully me and t'other dude just hear him, not see him mind you, hear him, GD this MF'in course. A couple of minutes later, as we have played our second shots, we see him, and he's waving for us to go on.

We never saw him again.

Yeah, he's a little crazy!  Especially post-round. [sm_drink]

Many years ago I played with an old bloke at my club, who proceeded to fart his way around 18 holes.  He was eating dates and other dried friut and every 5 minutes or so he'd crack one off.  It was funny at first then became midly disturbing... at one point I thought he was going to implode...

For sure TFT.  I literally have no idea what the *fudge* that guy is saying the majority of the time.   ;D

Of course on the second nine I recall myself accidently stepping on his golfball. [sm_drinking]  Then we took so long finishing a par 5 a few holes later I completely forgot I hit my tee shot OB and had to take stroke and distance.  Yeah I made a 6 oops make that a 8 thanks for reminding me wanker.   [sm_drink]

Seriously I've been paired up with my share of weirdos but nothing too bad.  The guy that talked all the time on the tee box.  The guys that cheat and think they are playing seriously. 

Some time ago at my home course I was paired up with "Mr. Meticilous".  He moved like a cyborg in setting up at address, and used his club brush and towel on his irons after every shot.  Not just cleaning the grooves, but restoring to like new condition.  Every single shot.  No exceptions.  Really strange.

Been pared up a few times, no strange people yet. :D

Anyone thats ever been to any of the Chicago FGI outings years ago knows this guy - Pars4me was his moniker.

He was a perfectionist, yet could never attain anything close.  Yet that never stopped him from being absolutely beside himself with every miss, no matter how small.

Now beside himself is a PC term for 'complete out of his tree, vulgar tirade, self-abusive rants'.  This guy would launch into vulgarity the moment the ball didn't follow his exact instructions.  People on the course would look at us in disgust - I was embarassed beyond belief.  And the self-abusive?  Yes, he would actually hit himself!  On several occasions he pounded his fist into his own leg while driving to the ball (and cussing).

VERY stressful day for me.  Justin got me drunk and a dance with some hooters girls afterwards to make up for it  ;D

Funny thing is, he was very supportive of other players in the group.  He did stop cussing when it was time for us to hit and always gave words of encouragement.  If only he could apply such tact to himself  ::)

I think I'd just run over a guy like that.

I remember that guy.  When I played with him, it wasn't quite so bad, but he brought his Natural Golf instructor along as his partner.  He also added using a rangefinder on every shot to his routine.
