Title: How would you rank your interest in various spectator sports? Post by: dystopia on July 28, 2007, 02:44:52 PM I was thinking about all the controversies in sports in the past week (vick in the nfl, nba ref, steroids in baseball, doping in cycling).
I used to love watching the Tour de France and pro tennis as a kid, but now I couldn't care less about them. I used to follow the NHL much more closely until the 1994 lockout coincided with my moving to the west coast. I can see the NBA dropping off my radar in the next few years. Doing a quick assessment of my current mindset, here's the sports that I would say I have at least some interest in these days, and their relative ranks. (spectating, not playing) 1. NFL Football 2. NCAA Football 3. MLB Baseball 4. PGA Golf 5. NHL Hockey 6. NBA Hoops (no interest in x-games, arena football, champions tour, mls, wnba, wwe, etc) **EDIT [I didn't phrase this well]** What does your list/ranking look like? I will usually try and catch the Notre Dame game. 3. Watch all the Red Sox games, and if I am mood I will watch whatever game happens to be on. 4. Rarely watch golf unless I am drinking in the clubhouse. 5. Never, because the Bruins suck. 6. Never, absolutely no interest anymore. Other than that, I follow boxing pretty close, I love the X-Games, and when I was heavy into cycling, I followed the TDF. Title: Re: How would you rank your interest in various spectator sports? T1. EPL T1. NFL 3. PGA Tour 4. Intl. Soccer 5. European PGA Tour 6. Rugby Union 7. La Liga 8. NCAA Football I'd put GAA at the top of the list if I could see it more than once in a blue moon. I've caught one hurling final and one football semi-final since 2003. Used to be huge into tennis 'til Pete Sampras killed the sport via acute lack of personality. 1-NASCAR/Indy/F-1 2-NFL 3-PGA/LPGA/Amateur Golf 4-NCAA Football 5-Int'l Soccer 6-I'll watch Mariner games but usually not an entire game (unless I'm at the park). 7-I'll usually watch the "majors" of any sport, my name is Gregg and I'm an addict. We don't have an NHL franchise so I have no interest. Never got into X-games or arena football. My interest is waning on almost all professional athletics though, especially after the recent news. NCAA Football I never went to collidge, so NCAA FB never captured my interest. Having said that, we got a new "Sheriff" in town, so we may just be able to compete in the Big Ten(11). I'll most likely watch. 3. MLB Baseball I grew up playing baseball. I do follow the Twins a fair amount, but a small market team that won't spend any money..........and a 7 inning pticher's duel..........I've got paint that won't dry if I'm not on it. 4. PGA Golf Funny. I used to watch every tournament, every weekend. Now, I'm lucky if I tune into the final round of a major. I dunno.....I still like it, just busy I guess. 5. NHL Hockey [sm_disgust] 6. NBA Hoops I don't watch many games, but follow the team a fair amount. It's a huge "Soap Opera" here. The T-Wolves suck, and the future isn't bright. I hope the ref. scandal blows the thing wide open. (no interest in x-games, arena football, champions tour, mls, wnba, wwe, etc) Boy, howdy. Sorry Aske, et al. 2. NFL -- I usually watch at least one game each weekend, and more likely 2-3. 3. PGA/USGA -- I watch most of the coverage of the majors, but pretty much NOTHING else of the Tour. After that, the list stops completely. (I watch the Olympics, if that counts. But I don't follow the athletes or the particular sports at all.) NCAA Football - love a good Saturday night game. NHL Hockey - Sid Crosby has interest peaking again International Soccer Auto Racing - prefer IRL, but can watch NASCAR MLB - was may favorite as a kid. The uncompetitive balance of the league has really turned me sour. That's about it for pro sports form me. Basketball has no allure at all, unless it's Pitt in the tourney, which usually doesn't last long. Title: Re: How would you rank your interest in various spectator sports? I pay MORE attention to this than I do NASCAR and MLB in the summer. The beauty of ThE iNtErweb is it's a virtual clearing house of information, and you can get pretty much 'Real Time' results and video from some venues pops up every few weeks. NASCAR/IRL/Road Racing in just about that order, although haven't watched much NASCAR this year, mostly due to atrocious seasons by anybody I give a crap about. Local 'Minor League' Hockey (actually, it's top tier Junior Hockey for you Canuckies, a distinction lost on us Yanks) I watched several TOP NHL draft picks play this last season MLB. Everything else. NCAA Division 3A (?) football - The University of Dayton NFL Football -preferably the KC Chiefs, although they will suck big time this year and most likely next too. And probably until they decide to fire Herm Edwards. NCAA Basketball see second above, although they are Division 1 in basketball MLB not since 1994(?) THE strike/lockout. NHL never NBA never Locally, The Dayton Bombers ECHL Hockey, great hockey and we despise and hate the Toledo Storm, and the Cincinnatti Cyclones, The Dayton Dragons single A professional baseball. 7500+ seats, sold out every game since the stadium opened. I was thinking about some of the sports that have dropped down (or off) my list. Indoor & beach volleyball and ncaa lacrosse are no longer on my list, and the Olympics have dropped way down. I have a friend I used to talk baseball with all the time, but he no longer follows it and is now obsessed with UFC/MMA. I would have never predicted the rise of UFC 10 years ago. A lot of people I've been talking to are disillusioned with the current state of sports these days, it'll be interesting to see what the sports landscape looks like in 10 or 20 years and what'll be big then.
