Is Ben Curtis going to be another Andy North? (2 career majors (potentially) and a whole lot of nothing)

it would certainly at least somewhat justify him as not just a 1 major fluke like micheel
 [sm_shock]

in interviews , he says he focuses his game a lot more to compete in majors than week to week

i love watching someone like sergio play like he is right now, unafraid to try to hit the real shot the situation dictates instead of falling back into your comfortable safe shot.

that 'knockdown' driver is beautiful

right now, some great dynamics, i'd probably be happy with and of the top 3 winning this

garcia- finally gets one
harrington- gets 2 in a row and 3 of the last 6
curtis - gets a 2nd and takes himself out of the one hit wonder club

should be a great back 9

stenson lurking in contention too

kind of funny the massive TM driver campaign on during this...

harrington is hitting his 3w 25-40 yards past  garcia the last few holes.  i know harrington is a lot longer than you might think, but they usually hit driver almost the same distance.   that is either not a 3w , or that is one short as *feces* 3w

ok, so peter butkiss now says it was a 5W not a 3W.  announcing at the tee FTL

garcia then chunk dunks it in the water on his approach in to 16

wtf

what is mccord talking aobut ? that clearly crossed the margin

There will be talk.  There always is when someone has two in a row.

If his putting is on form I should think he'll offer up a strong challenge at Augusta.

I figured him for a HOF spot after the Open with 20+ wins and two majors.  Now he's an absolute lock.  Best Irish golfer ever by a long shot (see Fred Daly for comparison.)

Just to be clear, I love Padraig, talented, tough, great golfer. What he did Sunday on 16-17-18, awesome.  [sm_thumbsup2], and the fact that Saturday/Sunday almost felt like watching a US Open tells me he could win one of those.

But...he has to win at least one more (maybe two) of these when a certain someone (who shall go nameless) is also in the field, before I get too excited about him winning four in a row, He's won these last 2 without (him) there.

Just sayin'.

when was the last time anyone won 4 in a row (calendar year or not) before  'his greatness' came onto the scene ?
how many even have a career slam?
It's not like these things were exactly commonplace before he came around.  In fact, pretty much getting such an accomplishment automatically puts you in the top 6-8 of all time :)

Kind of my point aske, how can a "Paddy" slam even be taken seriously when he's won one major with TW in the field. He's halfway to the career slam but so are a bunch of other cats, with names like Daly and Faldo and Mickelson and Singh. Career slam? Five golfers in history have done it, which is quite telling.

I don't think he'll do it.  I just think there will be tons of talk.  In fact, only Tiger Woods returning from injury for his first major back at the Masters next year will trump the "Paddy Slam?" story.

Freakin' awesome, I actually got goose bumps when he rolled that putt in on 17. Fact is I wish he (or anyone) would step up and beat T head to head (with some consistency), I think it would be great for golf. And I loooooooove the not blinking and the tongue thing, he is like in another zone man.

Ps. I am so tired of Sergio whining about his bad breaks. IT WAS A FOUR FOOTER SERGIO, HARDEN THE *fudge* UP! Sorry.

Ahhhhhhhhhh whew. Engage he did. Jones did, but their were 2 different tourneys then versus now, Jones won the British and US Amateurs (different beast still impressive) as well as the British and US Opens, (*see technically speaking). Hogan did not win all four in a row, Tiger is the only one, technically speaking of course.  ;)

I knew that about Jones but back then it was still called the Grand Slam if I recall. Still best in the world playing the best and with the equipment they had. Different game all together.

I wasn't sure about Hogan but I thought I heard he did it. Just looked it up. Hogan won 3 in a row in 1953. He could not compete in the 4th major (PGA championship) as it overlapped The Open, he opted out in order to play in The Open. So back in his day it was impossible to win all 4 in the same year and one would have to skip one to play the other the next year in order to say they played all 4 in a year. Skipping The Open to play the PGA just doesn't sound right. Maybe why they moved the PGA?

Which is one of the more of the most hardest to do today?

Current major Grand Slam.

Bobby Jones Grand Slam.

Patriots 19-0

I say trying to repeat Jones' Slam would be downright unpossible. (Didn't take the time to see if there are scheduling conflicts.)

Grueling multi day match play events, followed by facing tour professionals on one of the world's toughest stages..........rinse and repeat.

I'm not sure but I think the term "grand slam" didn't arrive in the golf vocabulary to reference this feat until years later, for some reason the phrase "the great quadrilateral" seems to be hanging in the recesses of my brain as a term they used when Jones accomplished the feat.

Quote

True dat, but it was still possible to win 4 in a row (which is what I thought you said) if he started with the PGA and then the following year won the remaining 3. No one did that.

Quote

Would have to agree, which may be why he retired at 29 (or whatever he was), there were stories about how just a physical wreck he became, stomach problems and losing hair, to me it's still the greatest feat in golf, tiger slam be damned, although I never thought I'd see a golfer hold all 4 majors at once Jones' feat was the best

Jones's feat could not be replicated today.  Back then, professional golfers were outcasts, and amateurs ruled the roost.  Those days are long gone.  Today, professional golf is a career, there are Tours the world over, and the depth of competition is several-fold greater than nearly a century ago.  Amateurs today are sorely pressed just to make the cuts at the US Open and Open Championship, let alone contend, let alone close the deal.

I have immense respect for Hogan and his accomplishments, but I don't think he could have won the PGA.  Multiple days of back-to-back matches, and match-play at that.  After his accident, he never played the PGA again until it switched to medal-play.  (He also never played the Open again, so the schedule conflict isn't an excuse.)
