Title: Penn State: Death penalty, or not?
Post by: MFAWG on November 13, 2011, 07:25:25 AM
I've given it a couple of days: If the NCAA won't suspend a program over this, they need to just give up on any appearance of being a sanctioning body and go straight to running a protection racket:

'Hey, nice stadium you got there, be a shame if anything happened to it.'

I doubt the NCAA will do it.  I could see them saying something like "it's a criminal matter/outside of our jurisdiction/passing the buck".

On another front, I thought the Moody's downgrade warning was interesting:

It’s likely that the fallout still has a long way to go, though, as prospective donors and students digest the full extent of the wrongdoings in State College, Pa.; the university also faces possible lawsuits from Sandusky’s alleged victims. Moody’s said Penn State has about $1 billion of rated debt.

“Over the next several months, Moody’s will evaluate the potential scope of reputational and financial risk arising from these events,” the ratings agency said in a statement. “While the full impact of these increased risks will only unfold over a period of years, we will also assess the degree of near- and medium-term risks to determine whether to downgrade the current Aa1 rating.

“We will monitor possible emerging risks emanating from potential lawsuits/settlements, weaker student demand, declines in philanthropic support, changes in state relationship and significant management or governance changes,” according to Moody’s

The Moody's downgrade is the only reason to keep the program going: You're probably looking at dozens of victims and tens of millions of dollars in lawsuits that the state would be smart to settle quickly and quietly. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is going to be on the hook for the bulk of that money, and the football program makes money.

Money is not a good enough reason IMHO.

Probably not.

The NCAA will do the same thing they did after the Newtons admitted to running a 'Pay For Play' scam: Nothing. It's what they do best.
