Title: January in the 'Lou
Post by: hobbit on January 29, 2008, 03:27:37 PM
The Shire is usually a mild place to live in the winters, save a few power debilitating ice storms.  You're gunna get a few days when it reaches 70*, and others that get below 20*.  But today - that all happened inside of a few hours  [sm_shock]

Went to lunch, we ditched the coats, the subway had its doors propped open - a nice 73* when we returned around 12:45.  When I left work at around 5:10pm, it was snowing and windy.... and 23*.

Another typical January day in St. Louis.  ::)  :-\

pretty much how we're rollin here today too. minus the 73* of course. in the mid 40's earlier and sunny, then possible severe thunderstorms with wind gusts of +50 mph. then 3" of snow tonight with a high wind advisory. then another 6"to 8" thursday night. :sad3:

Hit 60 today; dropping to 40 tonight, high 40s tomorrow, mid-20s tomorrow night.

But it's supposed to be 70 by next Tuesday!

While today wasn't that unusual, I can't remember a day where the temps swung so drastically.

Not often - its kind of a sarcastic reference to all the 'cute' names people give cities.

Today it was -8 and 30 mph winds.

****offnowadaysarcticairmass!

I've come to the conclusion that, at -47° (realfeel), it's cold outside.  'Course, I came to that conclusion because I thought for sure our window just cracked due to the the popping sound it just made.  No cracks, thankfully, just ice around the edges.  We really need to upgrade our windows....

I still recall my first visit to the twin cities, -50* (realfeel).  My boss and I got out of the cab at the hotel (wearing my typical leather jacket in the 'winter'), didn't feel too bad right away.  While we were getting the bags out of the trunk, the wind started cutting through my jacket, my 'nose'  ;) froze, and I decided to give the cabbie a little extra for bringing my bags inside for me, as I made a mad dash for the door - in what I believed was a run for my very life  ;D .   Freakin COLD!

Upon returning home, I quickly purchased a down filled overcoat for my future travels north.

about to get crazy/nasty here too

currently 52 (43 realfeel) with steady rain

by 8 am we'll be down to around 20 with a -3 realfeel  (yeh, that's nowhere near as bad as -50)

but all the rain on the roads is probably going to freeze straight into ice for the morning commute

The news just informed me to plan on adding an hour to my regular commute time in the morning.  [sm_shock]  :sad3:

One hour? That's nothing. This (http://www.kesq.com/Global/story.asp?S=7793009&nav=9qrx) little mishap shutdown the highway for over 8 hours so far. It still hasn't been reopened.

Little known fact: I was interred in St. Louis at a prisoner of war camp near Jefferson Barracks since early in the conflict.  There is not a thing I miss about that god-foresaken clump on the planet.
