This Sunday is a very important anniversary in professional hockey. On November 1, 1959, a goalie wore a face mask in a National Hockey League game for the first time.

Interesting.

I'm guessing that no longer being able to shoot at the face, gave rise to attacking the two hole.

Good old Jacques Plante.

Of course, players can still shoot at the head, the goalies just won't duck now.

Here's what Plante looked like after getting hit by a shot by Andy Bathgate.  He got stitched up, donned the mask and finished the game.
