Title: Live? From?, Now? Why?
Post by: stroh on November 22, 2006, 09:36:17 PM
I've wondered.

I was born and raised in Jax, FL, Moved up here(MN) in high school, 'cause my stepmother is from here.  I left for 4 years in the army, but came back.  Now I'm stuck.  My wife was born, raised, and her whole family lives here.  Now that our daughter is 8,.......we ain't goin' nowhere(even though I could move away, at the drop of a hat).  I'd love to move back, or even try Southewest.

I know Burzooom, hails from the great state of Tejas, and space, frou Utah. Sal. , Greece.

spacemeisters post about the booze reg.s,(sounds like a total PITA! [sm_cussing]) got me thinking, where are you from, why are you where you're at?

What's your story?

Utah native, born and raised. Moved around a couple of times, but the locations wouldn't mean anything to anyone but Uisce Beatha, so I won't bother, let's just say I've generally lived in the greater Salt Lake City area my whole life. As much as Utah drives me crazy, it is home, and I really love it here.

Beautiful mountains/backcountry, hiking, mountain biking, world class snowboarding, inexpensive upscale golf, etc. makes it hard to leave. That and my family is here and above all else, I love my family and like being close to them. I'm really just a homebody. The liquor laws blow (as I'm sure Uisce can attest), but they're also tolerable once you surrender yourself to them, and learn how to work around them.

Laura (mrs spaceage) hails from Rupert, Idaho, but it's basically Utah pt. II. She's more adventurous than me, having lived in a number of cities, states, etc. but she now calls Utah home, and my family is pretty much hers. I don't believe we'll stay in Bountiful much longer, but I think we'll probably be in Utah for the foreseeable future.

born: Ft Worth Texas (where incidentally, my parents born, raised, lived, still live)
left to San Antonio @ 18 for undergrad
lived San Antonio for 4 years of undergrad
left to Pittsburgh @ 22 for grad school
lived in Pittsburgh for 5.5 years now (grad school, and start of post-doc)

when i left San Antonio for Pittsburgh,  I never thought how much I would miss San Antonio.  this is not so much a knock on PGH (i really have grown to love it here)... just a rememberance of truly what a great, great place SA  is.  if someone gave me a few million now to retire on,  I'd certainly put SA in my top 3 or 4 choices.   I'd also be open to the Albuquerque or Santa Fe  experience (visited there and amazed),   Vancouver ,  or Athens (naturally)

Born in a hospital in Athens, Greece. Both parents from Pireaus, Greece, so naturally I lived there till 2004, when I  moved to Pittsburgh. That's about it ;)

Lived in Minnesota all of my 20 years.  Moved 3 times, though.  Born in Little Canada, then to Maplewood, then to the opposite end of Maplewood. lol

Born in CA. Lived there for 6 months. Moved to Denver until I was 7. Became a huge Broncos fan (Morton, Upchurch, Alzedo, Orange Crush Defense, etc...). Moved to Montana where I lived through college. Moved to Seattle, then Portland for 9 years. Lived on Whidbey Island for a year and now here. Hope I'm not going anywhere until I retire.

Space - Your wife is from Rupurt, Idaho! Ask her if she knows a guy named Kelly Woods.

Born:  Army base in Tidworth, Hamps.  Long story.  Involves an arsehole bus driver, a petrified corporal, a flat tire, a big dinner and an anesthesiologist with a degree from Grenada.  Lucky to be here really.

Raised:  Salisbury, Wilts. through age 10.  Half my summers in Gorey, Co. Wexford, Ireland (Mum's home town).  Salisbury is a great little town.  Still go back there once or twice a decade.  Gorey is currently the fastest growing town in Ireland due to commuter sprawl south out of Dublin.  We're good for once every 2-3 years in Ireland.  I think I'm doing a solo trip in the spring.  Well, solo other than my 14 little buddies.

Emmigrated:  Victoria, B.C.  for 18 months.  A fabulous place.  I'd recommend it as a great place to live in a heartbeat.

Emmigrated II:  Kearns, Utah.  I lived on the *feces*ty side of the tracks in one of the *feces*tiest suburbs of SLC.  But I didn't have the foggiest it so it was all good.  Straight A student through 11th grade but then succumbed to the dark side and barely scraped through the final year (dope, dames and deep powder, you know the drill).

Four years in the Air Force... Came home... Yada, yada, yada...  Picked up a wonderful wife, and subsequently two beautiful children, during my stay at Gunther AFB, AL.  We've been in Layton, Utah for the past eight years -- about 20 minutes up the road from Spacey.  Love it here.  Will never completely leave although I do envision summer palaces about the globe in my retirement.

Concur with Spacey about why it's good to live here.  Social conventions are goofy but if you grew up here you get a handle on how to operate.  The outdoor life in Utah compares with just about anywhere.  If we had a beach (well, one without brine shrimp, flies and stank) it'd be perfect.

Here's the view from my back window.  I never get tired of looking at it.

Space - Your wife is from Rupurt, Idaho! Ask her if she knows a guy named Kelly Woods.

She says no, but she grew up on a small farm and didn't really interact with any families who were outside of her school or LDS ward.

He's definitely not LDS; Really nice guy about 42 or so.

Hell if Stroh (or any other golfho) makes it to Utah, I'll kick in for a whole case of 3.2!

Uisce- let's get something going in the spring maybe. I've never played Valley View.

LOL.   [sm_thumbsup]

Ooops, responded before your mod.  Sure, I'm up for it.  Valley View is a fine, fine course although it sucks on weekends due to lousy management from the clubhouse.  Anyway, if not there we have dozens of fine options.  I'm in!!!

If someone springs for your airfare, I'll pay your greens fees, but the pre/post round drinks will end up costing more than the greens fees around here.  ;)

Been in southern california my whole life.

If anyone knows socal or even cares I lived in Garden Grove til i was 5, Huntington Beach until 18, then spent time moved around on my own between San Diego, Anaheim, Fullerton, Yorba Linda, and now Corona.   :)

Been to the east coast and I don't like it.  I'm definitely a West coast guy, might wanna settle in either pac nw or san diego after I finish school.
