Title: Save the whales
Post by: 1puttpar on January 15, 2009, 03:33:17 PM
As if shooting wolves out of helicopters is not enough, Palin now wants to insure the extinction of the white beluga whale.  There are currently no more than 375 left in the world.

I'll stick up for her a little:

I'm guessing that putting the Beluga's on the endangered species list has a big negative impact on commercial fisherman in and around Cooks Inlet. That's a key constituency in the state, and one of the largest employers.

Sorry, it's all about oil.

The Awl Bidness would be the other major constituency and employer...

I think she's as big a tool as anybody, but in this case she's doing exactly what a state executive should do.

This isn't the first time Governor Palin has tried to sacrifice endangered species to the oil and gas industry. Last August, after a Center for Biological Diversity-led campaign won federal protection for the polar bear, she filed suit to strike the protections down in order to make things easier for Big Oil in the Arctic.

It may be what a state executive believes they should do for their constiuency, but it doesn't make it the right thing to do.

After reading a quote attributed to her, does anybody else get the mental image of watching her proudly wrestle the word "co-operatively" out of her mouth, as if she's just clubbed her 42nd baby seal of the morning?
