Title: Opening 5 seconds
Post by: Spanky on November 28, 2007, 06:58:38 PM
I was listening to Van Halen on the way home and started to think about the opening lyrics thread. And I thought what is the best opening 5 seconds of a song, or just a great song. Examples I thought of:

Van Halen:
Jump
Pretty Woman

Led Zeppelin:
Stairway to Heaven

Ugg, the first 5 seconds of Stairway To Heaven, the part where you have to decide whether you're going to sit through 3:30 of BS to get to the nominally good bits or turn the station now and hope for some Aldo Nova or maybe some vintage ABBA, you mean that 5 seconds?

For me, not so much.

There are so many opening riffs that grab you by the throat and dare you to touch the dial out there it's hard to  break 'em down...

Pink Floyd's Money would make my list, even though I'm not really a Floyd guy, it's still a great lick,

Anything by the Ramones, most things by The Clash will get me fired up...

Anyone of a half dozen things The Dead did, they were always the masters of sucking you into a song (alot of times, you couldn't find your way out)...

Satisfaction or Sympathy by The Stones...

Rage Against The Machine, again just about anything...

How about vintage Nugent?

See now that's what I'm talking about. Love em or hate em. The first 5 seconds that make you decide to turn up the volume (or change the station). The ones that make the crowd go nuts when done live.

Maiden - Run to the Hills (great song, not my favorite of the band but definitely fits the criteria.)

AC/DC - Back in Black and/or Shook Me.

'FAWGgy has it right with Money.  Brilliant opening.  Sheer genius.

I'll add 'Hells Bells'. Perhaps stretching the 5 second rule but I like the huge church bell.

Stretching the 5 seconds by a couple,
'She has funny cars' by Jefferson Airplane

Trying to think out of the box, it's hard though, and since you placed no limitations on genre.

Beethoven's Fifth

Pachabels Canon

Anything by David Allan Coe

Ditto on the Hells Bells

Van Halen Eruption

Ditto on "Money"

I've always like Baba O'Riley because of the build up from the organ intro to sheer mayhem.

Anytime I can add Brian May.

I just heard this and I instinctively reached out to turn it up by the 4 second mark. Song lyrics are NSFWET.
