Title: iPhone users
Post by: lennyquai on June 30, 2009, 11:22:05 PM
Thinking about transitioning from Blackberry to iPhone.  I spend most of my time on the phone (1500-2000 minutes per month) and in front of email (75-100 incoming per day).  I have read 10 pages of reviews on CNET.

I hate typing on the iPhone, but it really seems to handle viewing attachments quite well.

What say you?  Thanks in advance!!

I generally don't like typing on the iphone when the keyboard is in portrait more. (sausage fingers) But with the recent 3.0 OS release, the built-in apps I use the most (email, notes) now support the landscape keyboard when the phone is oriented that way, so I have few typing complaints anymore.

I spent a week trying another phone with a flip out keyboard (http://www.navigadget.com/wp-content/postimages/2009/02/nokia-e75.jpg) a little while ago.  One thing I noticed is that I spent a lot of time backspacing to correct typos on that phone, but on an iphone I just type and let the auto-correct do its thing, which works surprisingly well.

For me the most important feature on a phone is the web browser, and, for now, it's hard to beat the iphone for browsing.

Shutting up and going away.

It's all good, spacey.  Hope you are doing well.

Thanks, dys.  Much to my chagrin, I am pretty adept at the 2 thumb Blackberry typing, though reading emails on the iPhone, viewing attachment, and that damned purty browser keep calling my name.  I do need to see whether there are any issues using with a Comcast hosted Exchange account...

I use mine more for the novelty of having a fully enabled web browser on the go.  Nothing for business or anything like that.

I love it for what it does.

I love it for what I believe it does...and can do.  I think it will work very well for receiving / reviewing emails, and hope I don't have too many issues composing them.

Ultimately, I won't know until I buy it.  Tomorrow, maybe?

Typing sucks for about a week then it becomes second nature.  I rarely miss any more although every now and then I still hit backspace when going for "L".

Some of the apps out there are beyond amazing although many are beyond stupid.  Find the good ones, be imaginative in their usage and have a blast.

I too like mobile browsing although I don't have a basis of comparison so I can't say if mobile Safari is all that or what.

Warning - reports of white 3GS models discoloring under the heat of heavy usage.  Might be a battery issue.

I read a report on this.  A lot of phones are coming back.  The have a program at the counter that reads recorded internal temperature peaks.  Apparently, if it has spiked over 113F --> New phone.

Apple is disavowing any knowledge as of yet.

Cool.  iEggFryer app.  Fry an egg on your iPhone.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.  Ordered a couple yesterday.  They are only allowed to quote 1-2 week delivery time, though said I should have them Monday or Tuesday.

While I was leaning toward the white, I went w/ black after reading what Uisce and stroh said (and doing a little more Googling).  App I am most intrigued by is fmtouch (Filemaker database app).  Should be able to set-up some databases to make my office pretty virtual.  If I had Uisce's or dys's background, it could probably be a very cool set-up, but I am merely a salesperson with a techie side to me...

Wow, fmtouch is a $70 app.  [sm_shock]

Hey, after you get your phone, if you're looking for an app and can't find anything to do what you want (of the 56k apps currently), let me know and I can write one for you.(assuming it's somewhat simpler than fmtouch)

Or if you find apps that are close, but not exactly what you're looking for, I can make something based on your specs.  That goes for all of you here with iphones (Spanky, stroh, Teed, UB (that is, if you don't roll your own)).

I think it'd be fun to collaborate and make an app together here on golfhos.
(I've been kind of on the sidelines for the past year with family health issues or I would have suggested this sooner)

What development platform do you use? Java in Eclipse?

Hey, did you see that the Palm Pre SDK was leaked a while ago?  If you're a Sprint user, it might be a good chance to whip up an app and get a jump on their appstore.  It'll be interesting to see how that much their WebOS apps take off.

Man, Objective C has some ugly looking syntax.

Yeah, it's pretty wacky.  I look at it as a good way to keep the number of developers/competitors low.  Otherwise there'd be much more than 56k apps in the appstore and 15k publishers.

Although ease of language isn't everything, considering many more people know java, and the Android Market only has ~5k apps last I heard, and they let anything in.  The Pre will be interesting since it opens it up to anyone who knows ajax/javascript/html.

Xcode is a fairly weak IDE overall.  Especially given its age.  I've been using it for close to a decade and Eclipse is a welcome respite.

Objective-C is a B+ or so.  Cocoa rules.

Cool offer!  Too bad my imagination of app creation will likely be limited by...my lack of imagination...

Got my phones yesterday (my wife's desire is what spurred my initial interest).  I had mine for 24 hours before taking it back and swapping for a new one.  White screen of death after 1 call and setting up MS Exchange email.  Prick store mgr. was not going to exchange it due to Apple determined policy ("once it is out the door, you MUST contact Apple.").  I sat in the corner of the store on the phone with AT&T Customer Service until I could get someone with just enough authority to ok the swap.  Great service from the store sales/customer svc and corporate customer svc.  Just a stupid asshat of a store mgr afraid to make the right decision.  Dip *feces*.

No comment on all the programming language discussion.  WAY over my head.
