Title: Seeking car wisdom....flat tire
Post by: MP on September 10, 2007, 05:17:20 PM
So i just got a flat tire from hitting a *goshdarn* pothole and i get everything out to change the tire but the damn wheel won't come off the car.  i pulled and pulled for about an hour straight before giving up and leaving the car there and having a friend pick me up.

anyone know any secrets to getting a wheel off?   [sm_disgust]    idon't want to have to call a towtruck driver and watch him do it in 3 seconds and have to pay him $80 when i can do it for nothing.

fwiw, kicking and screaming doesn't seem to work

Were you able to get the lugnuts off?

We use a really, really big hammer, seriously.

It's easier if the tire is still inflated, but obviousy not an option for you.

Big hammer, hit it WAY harder than you think would be necessary, and once it gets moving it should be fine. Try to hit on the back side if possible.

PS: We never kick and scream. Swear, sure....

On topic:  MP, I can't think of anything......is it rusted on?

What kind of car?  Front or back?

Don't worry. There's still time to make a witty comment about "getting off" and "nuts" before anybody else does.

Last time i changed that tire was about 1.5 years ago and have gone about 40k of good stop and go traffic and haven't really washed the wheels.  brake grease buildup everywhere really.  and yea, it's the front tire.

can't help but think if i wasn't tailgating the idiot who was doing 30 in a 45 i woulda seen that pothole comin'   [sm_devil]

I'm still not clear on what "the wheel won't come off" means. Is it the lug nuts specifically that you're talking about or you can't get the wheel off the axle after having removed the lug nuts?

I don't think MFAWG was kidding.  You need to hit from behind (all the way around).....

OTT  I'm stumped.  'Specially since you just had it off a year ago.   :-[

No, really NOT kidding, it's a common problem.

You need the biggest BFH* you can find. We use an 8lb 'Duckbill' sledgehammer for the hard cases...

8.5 Lb. 32 inch truck tire hammer, although anything in the 3 to 5 lb range will do.

Try jacking the car up to get the weight off the tire.

Took about 5-6 solid hits with a regular house hammer to get it to budge.  you shoulda seen the caked brake dust that came off with it though lol.  I'm $160 lighter though after replacing both fronts.  they needed replacing anyway just didn't want to do it yet.  no beer money for the next month.
