Title: Patriots Camera Confiscated. Spying on Jets?
Post by: dystopia on September 10, 2007, 02:13:57 PM
I remember hearing about this last year after the Packers game, but nothing seemed to come out of it last time.

Sources: Camera confiscated after claims of Pats spying on Jets
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3012989&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines

Quote
NFL security confiscated a video camera and its tape from a New England Patriots employee on the team's sideline during Sunday's game against the Jets in a suspected spying incident, sources said.
....
The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches who were sending signals to their unit on the field, the sources said. The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game.

The league's competition committee could conduct a conference call about the incident, which violates NFL policy, and ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost the Patriots a future draft pick or picks if it verifies that the team was spying on the Jets.

"It's not their first time," a member of the committee, who did not wish to be identified, said.

In fact, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed a similar incident that occurred when the Patriots played at Lambeau Field last Nov. 19. The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins.

I think he just said 36 slot left, wide left, corner drag,  tango coyote split fake red Houston ......on 2.

But I'm not sure.

Anybody get that on tape?  Who here reads lips?  Was it tango coyote? or split drag corner left?

This is a joke. Wow - a man with a camera on the sidelines of an NFL game - who would have thunk? Outrageous!!! I've never seen that before!! Gimme a break. First of all, you've got to be kidding me if you think the Patriots are the only team in the entire NFL that has been doing this. Second, what good does it do anyways? I mean any guy with a clipboard standing there watching could accomplish the same thing...probably even easier that way, and I'm sure every team does that. So as far as any competitive advantage goes, I don't think there is one.

Remember last year when the Dolphins were accused of stealing the Patriots signals at the end of the season? It happens every year, in every game, in every sport. Why do you think they change the signals all the time? Teams steal other teams signals, it's part of the game. Using a camera to do it against league policy is probably a dumb thing to do, but I doubt it really helps more than watching with your eyes and recording it in a notebook, which every team probably does to some degree.

The dumb thing is the Patriots have no need to do this anyways, so I'm not sure why they would take the risk, doesn't make much sense. But, you're kidding yourself if you think other teams don't pull every trick in the book to try and win. Mangini and Belichick and the Pats and Jets have a pretty intense rivalry, and each team will do anything to beat the other.

I just heard the punishment. They have to go back to the old logo, but they have to add the image of Roger Goodell banging him from behind, with no courtesy reach around.

Guess the commish thought it was a bad thing to do based on the fine! [sm_shock]  $500K to the coach, $250K to the team and loss of 1st round draft choice if they make the playoff's this year.

Why not go ahead and take the win from them last week?

It's a good decision by the commish. Frankly, I doubt any of the Pats players knew it was happening. With the turnover in the league you wouldn't be able to get away with that for long before an ex teammate blows the whistle. The coaches and coordinators were probably the only guys in on the scam.

I won't go so far as to say their Super Bowls are tainted, but they better continue to kick ass this season. If they go 7-8 the rest of the way, then yeah, I think I WOULD say their SB's are tainted. It would be hard to conclude otherwise.

To think the Pats are the only team doing this would be naive. Every team has something on every other team. It may not be video but they have audio, notes, etc.. It's a cat and mouse game coaches play with the other team. The Pats got caught. Taking video and the radio frequencies just took it over the edge. I am sure this is not the last we will hear of it.

Good decision by Goodell.

I'd like to have seen Belichick suspended for a game as well. After Commish suspended Wade Wilson for HGH he said that coaches have to be held to a higher standard. And the Pats were warned last year.

It is wayyy over the edge, and I'm not so sure that other teams are doing this. To put it in a baseball context: if the man on second is stealing signs and tipping off the batter, that's uncool, against the unwritten rules, and he'll likely get a fastball in his ear the next time he's up, or drilled with a pickoff throw. On the other hand, if there is a guy with binoculars in center field stealing signs, and then using a radio to relay that sign to the batter or coaches (sort of like something the Phillies have been accused of doing recently), that's way over the line and beyond what has ever been a "healthy" part of the game. In both cases they're stealing signs, but in the former it's part of the time honored cat and mouse game. The latter is just way, way over the line.

I'm sure all teams try to read and steal signals, but I'm not so sure they're doing something this egregious.

A friend of mine, Cowboys fan, has never been able to reconcile the job Bill Belichick has done at New England with his tenure in Cleveland.  He wants to give the guy credit but the dichotomy has bugged him for years.

Not saying his reservations are necessarily vindicated but there's no doubt detractors will have a field day with this.  His 'aura' his been tainted forever.  This particular trump card will exist as long as memory.

I don't disagree with this. What the Pats did is over the line. I think there should have been a suspension as well. Is this why the Pats have been so successful? I know I have heard commentators saying that Brady can pick apart a defense almost like he knew what they were doing. One has to wonder now if that may have been the case.

The Patriots' cameraman was doubtable of aiming his camera at the Jets' arresting coaches who were sending signals to their assemblage on the field...

I find it doubtable that the assemblage of Jets coaches can be referred to as "arresting".
